Even A CoD-Style Shooter Isn't Off The Table For Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy has always adapted to its players' tastes.

Square Enix says it's open to making a first-person Final Fantasy game in the style of Call of Duty. Final Fantasy is known for its wide range of genres and mechanics, such as traditional turn-based combat and even real-time action across its many games, but Square Enix is evidently open to evolving the series further.

This comes by way of a recent Bloomberg interview with Square Enix Vice President Yoshinori Kitase, who discussed how Final Fantasy has evolved over the years. Kitase noted that the series has changed with its players' tastes, adapting to new generations. When asked if the series could ditch its RPG systems in favor of a first-person military shooter, Kitase said he'd be open to making a Final Fantasy game similar to Call of Duty.

Now Playing: Final Fantasy 16 Preview

Of course, this was just a hypothetical comment, but the series has ventured into shooter territory before. One such game is Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, a third-person shooter released for the PS2 in 2006.

Kitase also explained that younger Square Enix staff members are responsible for coming up with new ideas. "My imagination really has its limits," Kitase said. "So it’s really great to have a new generation of creators on board."

According to Kitase, Call of Duty is about "using all this modern weaponry, but when you think about it, it’s this small group of people going around saving the world--that’s very Final Fantasy."

While there's no word on whether a Final Fantasy first-person shooter will ever come to be, players can look forward to the latest installment, Final Fantasy 16, which launches on June 22.
