Dark Void due in 2010, 2 million sales targeted
Capcom confirms its sci-fi PC, PS3, and 360 action game has slipped out of the increasingly sparse holiday season; publisher predicts game will go double-platinum its first year.
Dark Void has joined the 2009 Dropouts' Club. As part of an earnings report this morning, Capcom confirmed that the sci-fi actioner, first announced in October 2007 for a winter 2008 release, will not arrive until early 2010. It is now set to ship in North America and Europe for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 during the January-March quarter, the last of its publisher's fiscal year.
"Dark Void is moving into Capcom's fiscal Q4 in order to get the game out of the crowded fall game season and to allow the development team more time to polish and enhance the game experience," a rep told GameSpot. The company predicts that the move will help the game hit a first-year sales target of 2 million units worldwide on all platforms.
Dark Void is the first project from developer Airtight Games, home to several veterans of the shuttered FASA Studios (Crimson Skies). The third-person shooter will have players engage in fast-paced vertical combat (see video below) courtesy of in-game jetpacks. It sees mankind fighting The Watchers, an alien race banished by humanity to an alternate universe after its members developed superpowers. As outlined in GameSpot's recent hands-on preview from the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the game will see the Watchers return to extract their revenge.
Dark Void is the latest postponement of a triple-A title from a major publisher. Other recent delays from 2009 to 2010 include Sega's Bayonetta, Activision's Singularity, Ubisoft's Splinter Cell: Conviction and Red Steel 2, and Take-Two's Red Dead Redemption, Mafia II, and BioShock 2. However, the first quarter has proved a lucrative release window for Capcom in the past, with such hits as Resident Evil 5, Street Fighter IV, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, and Resident Evil 4 all debuting during the January-March period.
