February began with a rude surprise for fans of the PC edition of Dead Space. Publisher Electronic Arts detailed a release schedule that appeared to show that the sci-fi/horror-survival sequel was no longer in development for the PC. The lineup did list Dead Space 2 as arriving on consoles and handhelds, although an EA rep said the latter classification may have been a reference to an iPhone spin-off.

Three months later, EA has released another earnings report and a new release schedule alongside it. The latter shows that, after a period of publicly announced "consideration," the PC edition of Dead Space 2 is back on. The news was also officially confirmed on Facebook and Twitter, the social networking sites publishers are increasingly turning to in order to make announcements.

Following months of rumors, Dead Space 2 was originally announced last December for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. According to EA's latest release schedule, the game is due out sometime in the publisher's fourth quarter, which runs from January to March, 2011.

Dead Space 2 will be set three years after the events of the original, which [SPOILER WARNING] saw deep-space engineer Isaac Clarke survive an onslaught of zombie-like necromorphs on the deep-space mining ship USG Ishimura. The sequel will reportedly see the population of a densely inhabited space station turn into necromorphs, with Clarke combating the mutated foes with a new arsenal of dismembering weaponry.
