[UPDATE] It looks like the news that Ed Boon teased yesterday is a new Mortal Kombat XL competitive tournament. Warner Bros. announced today that the new professional tournament series, which includes the ESL Mortal Kombat X Pro League Season 3 and the ESL Challenger Cup, will begin in April.

There is $500,000 in prizes up for grabs, which explains Boon's cryptic tweet below.

"Mortal Kombat has always been about friends going head-to-head in 'couch competition.' With Mortal Kombat X, these players now have multiple ways of jumping into the tournament scene to prove their skills and win cash," Boon said in a statement today. "This is the biggest commitment we've made to the esports scene and with our newly enhanced online experience, we're looking forward to seeing the intense match-ups at the various tournaments we're supporting."

It's also been announced that players can now buy the Blue Steel Sub-Zero or another new character skin from PlayStation Store or Xbox Marketplace, with a portion of proceeds going toward increasing the upcoming Mortal Kombat X prize pools. The Halo World Championship did the same thing.

More details on the Mortal Kombat X tournament can be found on the ESL's website.

Warner Bros. and NetherRealm are preparing to make some kind of announcement about Mortal Kombat XL, it seems. Series creator Ed Boon said today on Twitter that "big news" about the fighting game will be announced as soon as tomorrow, March 30.

Boon went on to tweet a couple more times about things that may or may not be related to this week's Mortal Kombat announcement. It should also be noted that Boon enjoys his cryptic tweets, and, combined with the fact that Thursday is April Fools' Day, something strange might be brewing here.

For instance, Boon started talking about a Mortal Kombat X April Fools' Tower today. We'll report back with the Mortal Kombat XL news as soon as it's announced--whatever it is.

Mortal Kombat XL is the newest version of the fighting game, containing the base game and all of its previously released DLC.
