THQ and Yukes recently released UFC 2009 Undisputed to widely positive critical reception, and in the absence of any mixed martial arts-based competition, it looked like their closest competitor in the fighting scene would be EA’s upcoming Fight Night Round 4. Apparently, that’s no longer the case. During EA’s E3 2009 press conference earlier today, the megapublisher announced development on a new game titled simply as EA Sports MMA.

However, details on the game begin and end with its title. No further information was given for EA Sports MMA. We’re left wondering which fighters will be included in the game, or if there’s going to be any sort of league affiliation involved to help battle against the brand recognition of THQ’s Ultimate Fighting Championship license.

Another pressing question has to do with the studio involved in the game’s development. A safe bet would be EA Canada, the studio responsible for Fight Night Round 4. It is currently winding down development with that particular game set to ship on June 25. However, that’s purely speculation on our part. We should have more information on EA Sports MMA in the very near future, so stay tuned.
