At a press event last week Acclaim Entertainment showed a video of an early build of its upcoming I, Gladiator action game.

The game's story is set in the year 106, during the decline of the Roman Empire. As such, the game has a look familiar to films such as Ben Hur, Sparticus, and, of course, Gladiator.

You play the part of a Roman slave who rises up to fight the good fight against the evil Roman oppressors. In the video we were shown it looked like the game includes a lot of hacking and slashing, with multiple adversaries coming in from all directions. The game is said to contain multiple weapons and fighting styles, and the fights will take place in and outside of arenas. In the game's campaign, players will take on an assortment of missions that have a variety of different objectives. Along the way, players will improve their character's skill set by learning new moves and gaining strength. At the end of some levels, players will have to face large boss characters.

From what we saw I, Gladiator definitely looked interesting. The game's lighting, even in its current stage of development, already looked rather impressive. Whether the game's story, which is said to include classic history and mythology, will mesh with the rest of the package still remains to be seen.

I, Gladiator is being developed by Acclaim Manchester and is currently scheduled for release sometime this fall. Check back for more details in the near future.
