Hands-onDie Hard: Vendetta

Vivendi Universal gave us a chance to check out the latest build of Die Hard: Vendetta for the GameCube. The game is a first-person shooter based on the incredibly popular Die Hard film franchise.

Die Hard: Vendetta's story takes place after the events that transpired in the third Die Hard film. Lucy McClane, who appeared briefly in the first film as a child, is now a full-grown adult and appears in the game as a police officer who finds herself caught up in a situation involving lots of bad guys with guns. John McClane sees the events begin to unfold on television and heads down to the scene along with Sgt. Al Powell.

The gameplay and overall feel of the game are similar to Electronic Arts' James Bond 007 in Agent Under Fire. The game defaults to having an aim assist on to help you blast the onslaught of enemies you encounter, although you can turn it off for more of a challenge. The game features various weapons, including pistols, shotguns, submachine guns, and even a crossbow. Large levels filled with a great number of enemies complement the game's visceral action, but there are moments in the game when the pace slows down to accommodate stealthy gameplay mechanics.

In its current state the game looks like it's coming together quite well. The visuals are very sharp, and the character models look good and animate well. The sound, which is presented in Dolby Pro Logic II, is very rich with lots of different sound effects and some good voice acting.

Be sure to check back in the next few days for a full preview of Die Hard: Vendetta.
