BioWare has stocked Dragon Age: Origins with a steady stream of new downloadable content since the dark fantasy role-playing game launched in November. The EA-owned developer has plans of a similar nature with its sci-fi RPG Mass Effect 2, which is due out for the Xbox 360 and PC next week. Today, BioWare announced The Cerberus Network, an in-game channel for delivering free new downloadable content and news for Mass Effect 2.

Mass Effect 2's first batch of add-on content will be available upon the game's launch on January 26 in North America and January 29 in Europe. The pack will contain new items and quests, one of which introduces the mercenary Zaeed, who can join Commander Shepard's crew. Other new content headed to The Cerberus Network after the game's launch includes the Hammerhead hover tank, Cerberus Assault Armor, and the M-22 Eviscerator Shotgun.

The Cerberus Network will be offered as a free download to those who purchase a new copy of Mass Effect 2, redeemable by way of a packed-in code. Those who pick up a used copy of the game can gain access to the bonus content after purchasing The Cerberus Network for a one-time charge. BioWare did not indicate how much The Cerberus Network will cost if purchased individually. EA had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

[UPDATE] As spotted by BitMob, those who pick up a copy of Mass Effect 2 used will be able to purchase the Cerberus Network for MSP1,200 ($15).
