Nintendo talks competition with Xbox One, PlayStation 4
Scott Moffitt says "we're the one that is doing something a little different," calls out Wii U GamePad as "innovative" and "unique."
Compared to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the Wii U is the only next-generation system doing something "a little different," according to Nintendo marketing executive Scott Moffitt.
Moffitt explained to GameSpot this week that the Wii U's second-screen functionality, via the GamePad, represents a new way of play that is unmatched by its competitors.
"If you look at the new generation of consoles, we're the one that is doing something a little different," Moffitt said. "With second-screen gaming, with the GamePad, we're trying to offer something that's innovative, that feels unique and different that people can't play on past generation consoles."
Though the Wii U is the only new system to feature built-in second-screen support, the Xbox One and PS4 will offer similar functionality through SmartGlass and a stand-alone application, respectively.
Yesterday, Nintendo announced a $50 price cut for the 32GB Wii U, dropping the system to $300 effective September 20. The 8GB model will be phased out. This new pricing will put the Wii U a full $100 below the PS4 and $200 under the Xbox One.
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently commented on the Xbox One and PS4 launch lineups, saying, "Meh."
