TOKYO - GameSpot News has confirmed with Square that the US version of Final Fantasy VIII will contain PocketStation support. Through the use of the PocketStation, new characters and items can be unlocked.

Square decided to keep the option open to gamers in the case Sony eventually releases the PocketStation in the US. However, it appears that the PocketStation won't be landing on US shores anytime soon, and there will be no mention of the game's support for the unit on the packaging or manual.

Final Fantasy VIII releases in the US on September 7. According to Sony, the PocketStation will not be appearing in the US this year due to production demand for units in Japan.
