Sega competing in London Olympics 2012

Mario and Sonic won't be the only team Sega will be fielding for the 2012 Olympic Games. With its Nintendo collaboration headed to the Wii and 3DS, Sega announced plans today to commemorate next year's international sporting event with London 2012 - The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games. The game is slated to arrive for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2012.

Sega holds exclusive rights to publish games based on the Olympic Games, and this year's installment will see gamers transported to a virtual London to compete in more than 30 events. The publisher provided no additional details on which events gamers can expect. However, Sega did say that this year's installment will include more variety, as well as online leaderboards.

Whereas British studio Eurocom handled development duties on Vancouver 2010, Sega has tapped Sega Studios Australia (formerly The Creative Assembly Australia) for London 2012. In particular, the publisher touted Sega Australia's motion-capture facility.

The actual 2012 Summer Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in London from July 27 to August 12. For Sega's Vancouver 2010, the publisher launched the game a full month before the official games began.
