Simu Liu Reconfirms That Shang-Chi 2 Is "Definitely Happening"

The Marvel superhero will return.

There will be a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Star Simu Liu said once again that he will reprise his superhero role, but he still can't say when that will happen.

Appearing on The Tonight Show, Liu was asked by host Jimmy Fallon about Shang-Chi 2. The actor joked with Fallon at first, teasing: "You want me to lose my job, is that it?" But then the actor reasserted that a follow-up is still planned. "Well look, I will say this: It's definitely happening," Liu said.

This comes just a month after Liu responded to a fan on Threads, promising that Shang-Chi would return within the MCU. At the time, it seemed vague on whether Liu was referring to a sequel or just his inclusion in another Marvel movie. In 2023, Liu also was optimistic about Shang-Chi 2 but noted that it was getting pushed back because the next Avengers was also getting delayed.

On top of reconfirming the sequel, Liu also stated that Destin Daniel Cretton will come back as well to helm the movie. Cretton directed Shang-Chi and also served as a screenwriter on the MCU movie, which premiered in 2021 and went on to make over $400 million at the worldwide box office. Earlier this year, it was announced Cretton will direct the live-action Naruto movie. The filmmaker was also previously attached to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but he left the project in November.

There is no official release date for Shang-Chi 2 from Disney and Marvel. The only MCU movie coming out this year is Deadpool and Wolverine, which premieres July 26. For more, check out GameSpot's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings review.
