Following reports that Sony would unveil its new, upgraded PlayStation 4 in September, the company has officially sent invitations to the media.

The PlayStation Meeting, as Sony calls it, takes place on September 7 at 3 PM ET. It'll be held at the PlayStation Theater in New York. Sony doesn't explicitly say what it will be showing, but it's hard to imagine it won't be the rumored console unveiling.

Sony confirmed the existence of the new PS4, codenamed Neo, prior to E3 in June. Surprisingly, it opted to avoid saying anything about the console during the event, where Microsoft unveiled both the Xbox One S and Project Scorpio consoles.

There have been reports that Neo could be released before the end of the year. However, with the announcement of Project Scorpio, it's possible Sony's plans to do so were interrupted.

Like Scorpio with the existing Xbox One (and newly launched Xbox One S), Neo is intended to "sit alongside and complement the standard PS4." Both PS4 and Neo will play the same games.
