Nintendo shared more details about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 at its September Nintendo Direct. The presentation concluded with a new trailer, which debuted the new title and a release date. Now redubbed The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the game is releasing on May 12, 2023.

The new trailer was brief but teased some of what we can expect from the new Zelda game. It opened with moody slow pans across reliefs carved into a wall telling the legendary story, including what appear to be monsters and a woman joining hands with someone. All of that will definitely give the lore fans something to chew on for a while.

Now Playing: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Coming May 12th, 2023 – Nintendo Switch

Then it cuts into action shots of Link opening an enormous set of doors and running to the edge of his sky haven and leaping off. From there, we see brief glimpses of him riding a rock elevator, scaling a tree root, and even jumping onto the back of a flying creature that appears to be similarly styled to Breath of the Wild's Guardian automatons. It ends with the new logo and title reveal.

Tears of the Kingdom had originally been slated for 2022 but was pushed to Spring 2023 earlier this year. Game director Eiji Aonuma apologized for the delay at the time, saying it was necessary to ensure that the experience was "something special" for players. He also talked about the game's scope, saying the adventure takes place not just on the ground but also in the sky above, and "an even wider variety of features you can enjoy, including new encounters and gameplay elements."
