A step in the right direction

AC Syndicate is definitely a step in the right direction for the series, it takes the best of the previous games and puts them in a great setting. An AC game hasn't been this good since 2 and that's almost entirely due to its characters. Since the series left ezio we've had nothing but bland boring protagonists as well as villains. Jacob and evie are well developed and interesting with plenty of charisma. Starrick the chief templar also earns these accolades and it does the story well. It stands out narrative wise compared to the other more recent games which are almost entirely forgettable. It's a shame the ending isn't up to scratch and on par with the rest of it. It felt rather out of place and way, way to similar to AC unity. Gameplay wise it's a small step up from unity, a similar trend within the series from game to game, but definitely the most fluid in terms of movement and combat. Which has taken a more gritty style of brawling similar to the Askham series due to its setting. Freerunning is the best in the series, especially with the grapple gun which does so much for the game. It's going to be interesting to see how any future games deal without this mechanic. You have to suspend your disbelief on the fact it exists in the timeframe but it's a lot of fun moving around London. Speaking of which is one of the best settings in the series by far. It's beautifully reconstructed with the help of real photographs and it's monuments and landmarks are a treat to see, especially if your British. The AC games have a good track record for settings so you'd expect Syndicate to follow suit which it does with flying colours. Overall the game is definitely worth a go, even if your not the biggest of AC fans. It's the best the series has been in a long time and a lot of fun. It's not without its problems, there are still bugs hear and there but nowhere near the level of unit's catastrophe. It also unfortunately follows the series tropes, which it could do with ditching as the whole tower climbing map reveal has become tiresome. Still despite this it's definitely worth a play.
