Great concept but the game gets in it's own way.

I am going to start off by saying that I am a huge comic book fan. On top of that I prefer DC over Marvel. So I bought a PS3 just for this game and have been playing it since a week after launch.

The game itself as a concept is great. Getting to level 30 is pretty fun despite the repetition (kill X # of this, bring X # of this here). The voice acting is pretty good for the most part and visual are fantastic. You get to fight alongside your mentor and despite being a no-name superhero is asked to execute missions that could very well save the planet.

This is great until you hit level 30 and the game spikes in difficulty. Now, this part wouldn't be difficult if the game did a better job in telling you how to play your role, especially the controller role. At this point, the grind begins. You will run duos and alerts and raids over and over again in order to get weapons, skill points, armor, etc. For me, I actually enjoy this grind, getting my main character up to 75 skill points.

So far so good, right? Now come the bad parts. Before launch SOE gave potential customers the impression that it would launch content monthly. 5 and a half months later, there has been 3 updates with SOE citing "quality over quantity". This would typically sit well with me if they could deliver on the "quality" part. But with each update, a new set of glitches and bugs come up (while some make their returns). Whether it be a glitch that allows rifle users to do an insane amount of damage or the game un-inverting your camera when you enter a challenge instance. Eliminating or reducing these glitches usually takes anywhere from one to two weeks. But the glitches are not the only thing that detract from the quality of the updates. A substantial portion of each update is just recycled material from existing content. One of the the Crime Bible level is just Monarch level but backwards. Existing missions are turned into "new" duos. Two alerts were introduced in Update 3 and one of them is just a more difficult version of an existing alert.

Not so bad, right? Here's more. For those who like to play against other players, you are going to spend more time waiting than you will playing. Queues for PvP can sometime take a half hour depending on the time of day and your server. SOE aims to fix this by merging into "Megaservers" so there are more people in the server, thus reducing the wait times.

Great idea? Sure, except one small thing. The game is very unstable. Before Update 3, the game would crash an average of 4 times per day (admittedly I play alot). Since Update 3, I have been averaging about 15+ crashes per day. Sometimes, I would crash, restart and re-log, then immediately crash again. There have been two patches since Update to reduce the crashing and the instability is still rampant. That makes me wonder what the stability will be like when more people are in the same place at the same time.

As a concept, the game is actually really good. The combat system is great and the visuals are actually quite stunning. The problem lies in the execution and the lack of content being delivered by SOE. And even with suck a lack of content they still fail to deliver an acceptable amount of quality. There are some companies that I have blacklisted (meaning I will never buy another game from them again). SOE is now on that list.

The game is actually quite fun. The problem is that you will be spending more time waiting and restarting your PS3 than actually playing.
