A damn fine collection of some very strong action games.

User Rating: 8 | Devil May Cry HD Collection PS4

*DISCLAIMER: This review will largely focus on the "Devil May Cry HD Collection" as a set. Game quality will be taken into account in some minor ways, but I'll largely focus on the value of the combined collection. If you're interested in hearing my reviews of the individual games, you can find those on my profile.*

The early 2010s were most certainly a time for re-releasing remaster collections for the seventh-generation consoles. I mentioned Sony doing this when I reviewed the "Ratchet & Clank Collection," but third-party games got in on the fun, too. "Devil May Cry," being one of the most iconic action franchises in gaming, most certainly got its chance to be remastered, both for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. And unlike many of Sony's own HD collections, this actually would later get ported to eighth-generation consoles, meaning that the classic "Devil May Cry" trilogy is still easily circulating and accessible on modern systems. And it's a good thing, too, because this is a great collection of some awesome games.

"Devil May Cry HD Collection," on its own, is a great idea for a remaster collection because the original games still play excellently. These games were extremely important and influential to the action genre upon release, and it's easy to appreciate the influence these games have had on action games of the future. Beyond that appreciation, the games are just as fun today as they most likely were many years ago, and the 60 FPS action feels awesome. The HD facelift does help the game's visuals, and the addition of a concept art gallery is welcome.

My big gripes with this collection are that it's unfortunately light on extra content. You're mostly just getting the games, the art gallery, and that's it, meaning there's not a whole lot to offer if you own the original versions. Also, the aspect ratio is inconsistent between the games, which can be a bit frustrating to deal with.

Overall, the "Devil May Cry HD Collection" is a great remaster collection of some pretty brilliant games. It's nice to see that these games are still so easy to find on modern platforms and that they play so well today. Like many remaster collections, it's probably not the most essential buy if you already own the original versions, but if you're looking to get into the "Devil May Cry" series yourself, there's almost no better way to do it than with the "Devil May Cry HD Collection."
