What could be a Rip-off ends up setting the bar

User Rating: 8.5 | EA Sports MMA PS3
I was hesitant about picking this game up, so much so, I rented it. While I am not the biggest fan of EA Sports right now (Thanks to the HUT in NHL11) I thought... this has to be better than UFC 2010. I hoped.. and I was right. I find the controls to really be better than UFC if you compare them head-to-head. MMA comes across more... timed? It isn't just about who can button-mash the fastest; it's about who can time their controls better. There is more strategy in this and I think with some minor tweeks in their hopeful follow up, this game will surpass THQ's UFC series.
The graphics and detail in this game are much better. With the addition of the game face (similar to Tiger 11 and Fight Night 4) you can truly sink yourself into the ring. Bust a cut open and you could get blood on you. I fought one guy and hammered a cut open, threw him to the ground and I had a bloody hand print on my arm.
While the reviewer for gamespot did hit something on the head here and that is the collision. It just doesn't feel like it has the same pop UFC does, but the rag doll physics and the knockouts are still pretty nice. Just a little more strength in those shots would be nice.
Menu is cleaner. It is easier to move around the menu and look at the options. Career mode is also a lot better, with better training and menu interface.
Soundtrack is nice but a custom one or even custom entrance songs would've been great.
Overall, I give this game a solid 8.5/10.
