Why didn't I play this sooner?

I originally bought this game with its sequal for $9 in a bargain bin. I don't know if it was the non-fantasty setting, the different setting (post-acopalyptic California?), or that I found it in the bargain bin that made me allow dust to gather on this gem.

After seeing the gameplay footage from E3 '08, I decided to fire this up and see what all the fuss was about.

Holy crap.

All-skill (non class) based character creation, new setting (ironically), intriguing storyline, fantastic voice acting, and just plain fun gameplay... this game is fantastic. It still holds up in '08, and there's no excuse to avoid this, as the vast majority of PCs (and notebooks) should be able to run this game.

My only criticism is that there are few NPCs available to join your party, those that are (except dogmeat) lack in personality, and that they are incredibly weak due to the fact that they can't upgrade their armor.
By the time I arrived at the Cathedral, I was alone.
