Replaying RE6 makes me realize something that I miss how dumb and over the top the series was turning into I know that's blasphemy but RE7 and Village to me are meh. They don't feel like RE games Capcom honestly should of made them into a new horror IP instead of slapping the RE name on it. I definitely do think RE needed a make over after 6 they should of just toned down or got rid of the QTE's and slowed down the series a bit but kept it in third person mode.

I miss the stupid not saying this game is great or even good but I kinda of miss how bat shit crazy this series was at a time.

6 has a few positives, the jump and floor attack is fairly decent, as are sections of Leon's and Ada's campaigns. Mercenaries was also great but would be done better in Revs Raid modes.

The over the top nature was bad for the series, it was getting out of hand. 6 was the nail in the coffin. Granted the game is also a QTE Hell-Hole.

That's why Revelations was really the first attempt on bringing Survival Horror back into Capcoms franchise. I think the first Rev game was still a little tone deaf, Rev1 has its pros and committed fans but have covered why I feel the way I do for that game. End result was still a good game but still too action focused.

We get fans of all kinds from such a large and old series. So I'm not shocked some value the silly nature 5 & 6 was going for. To many it was probably the introduction to Resi. Heck I've seen Operation Raccoon fans.

However it cannot be denied that Resident Evil was losing its identity. Resident Evil is not Devil May Cry and I think Capcom needed to be reminded of that.

I was playing Revelations 2 not long ago cleaning up 100% achievements with a friend. Despite its issues Rev 2 is a game I think very highly of.

And yes I prefer Rev2 over the Ethan games in my opinion.

Granted playing Rev2 solo is frustrating, so does require a second person because the game was built for that in mind. Not defending this aspect as I wish it was handled better for solo play.

And I won't pretend the production value was anything other than low-budget. The episodic nature didn't please anyone either.

Rev 2 Raid however is just a better version of Mercenaries from the main numbered series. And the unlockables and difficulty sliders put Revelations 2 higher than a lot of the non-Remakes for me (judging the more recent games). For a long time if I wanted a good modern Resident Evil game Psycho Break/ The Evil Within was the only answer, it's sequel being absolute gold!

Rev 1 & 2 was really the beginning of the Resi series getting back on track, didn't have the budget to make the impact VII had, and they do feel way more experimental/ less polished. Rev 2 perhaps borrowed too much from TLoU for my liking during its campaign(s) however.

Re7 was great and a return to form. Re8 was making the same mistake Capcom made with Re6. Tried to make it into some action game.

Is RE6 the African one?

Seemed a little dude bro/badass chica, if I am thinking of the right game. I remember when it came out and I think it might have been around when Dead Space came out too, so maybe they thought that's the direction horror games were going in?

*Nevermind I'm thinking of RE5 I guess.

I actually replayed Resident Evil 6 and it's honestly not a bad game. If only it got modern control support and the camera wasn't close and more like RE2 Remake, it would be perfect. Maybe redo the campaign for Jake Muller and Chris Redfield. A bit campy but I honestly miss that it a Resident Evil game less the bosses trying to take over the world. Though I think RE5 was probably worse with Chris Redfield smashing a bolder with his fist like The Hulk if he had super strength.

Yeah that's Resident Evil 5, which is a very dudebro game. 6 manages to take it even further.

5 is still a competent coop video game but was part the problem in the series. I will say Resident Evil 5 if taken out the series is a very fun video game with a friend.

I don't think Dead Space had any effect on Resident Evil 5. It was more the other way around_

"It's pretty obvious when you play Dead Space, to look at it and go, 'Yeah, it's almost like they decided to make Resident Evil 4 in space,' which is exactly what we were doing"-Ben Wanat

Clearly big fans of Capcom, Visceral Games was infamous for cute tracing paper games at a high quality. They must like what Santa Monica Studio did too because Dante's Inferno was 1to1 God of War. And the OG Dead Space borrowed a lot from critically acclaimed Resi4 as quoted above by key member of the design team. Sadly I actually found DS1 difficult to enjoy, it was being a little too cute with its inspirations for my liking and as a result I think it's enjoyed more by people who skipped Resi4.

Dead Space 3 seemed to have had a lot of Resi 5 and 6, which wasn't good for the Dead Space franchise.

RE6 kinda jumped the shark but I still enjoyed it a lot. The gameplay was amazing and Leon campaign still feel that horror theme. Chris on the other hand wtf its an action game. But I somehow enjoyed it a lot it got the best budget and most focus I guess.

Another reason I appreciate RE6 more than the new entries and remake was because of the RE movies all followed the cheesy leon one liner canon and his very op gun fu skills. By RE4 Leon is a one man army and he knows it.

@RSM-HQ: didnt know visceral made dante's inferno. Seems they make quite a few high profile single player game for EA. Kinda make sense EA close them down when it doesnt translate to sales.

I enjoyed the over the top nature of RE6. I did also enjoy RE7 but thought RE8 was much better. Probably because it veered back into the over the top aspect.

@sakaixx: Probably didn't help that Dante's Inferno came out the same year as God of War III and CV: Lords of Shadow. People would rather play the real deal or the best clone than a third place entry getting average reviews. Dante's Inferno is not a terrible game but couldn't cut it in its own market.

Dead Space had competition too with Dark Sector also being a Resident Evil 4 clone but it goes without question that Dead Space is the better game of the two, and did enough on its own merits to be held with value.

An official Resident Evil would not come out till the year after Dead Space and Dark Sector, abandoning its Survival Horror roots further with a focus on 2-player coop which again helped Dead Space gather a respectable following.

Dark Sector has its fans however and the studio Digital Extremes clearly went onto great things with WarFrame (a spiritual successor/ sequel to Dark Sector)

I don't think that making RE6 more of an action game was its problem. There was a lack of focus and they tried to do too much by having four campaigns. All were underwhelming, had different pacing and tone. They didn't fit well together. RE4 and 5 were action focused and were much better games. I would say RE8 was more like RE4, but in first person. But yeah, RE7 is awesome. Took me a long time to decide to try it out, and I'm glad I finally did.

For the longest time I looked at the game over and over when it released for the 360 and I couldn't drop the hammer but I did a year or two ago on Switch. While I have enjoyed it, I found it to be quite cheesy. Some campaigns were better (the one where you start at university) than others (chinese casinos) and the MP wasn't bad. There was just enough interesting scenarios and content to keep me interested although much of the content seemed to be filler. The on-rail portions were forgettable. Was it worth it when priced at a steep discount? Absolutely.

I don't think that's really changed. Still pretty eccentric.

I mean, 9 foot vampire mommy, doll bride, western dude, werewolves etc....

For all it's massive (massive) faults RE6 is still enjoyable for at least one playthrough.

I agree 7 feels soulless. RE6 maybe flawed but like you said it can actually be fun and it feels like a RE game.

I love all the mainline REs except for RE5. RE6 was so bad and dumb and hyperbolic with its QTEs and set pieces that I actually liked it. It has some infuriating moments, though.
