Poll What was the best gen 8 open world game? (37 votes)

Breath of the Wild 27%
Witcher 3 11%
Red Dead 2 8%
Fallout 4 8%
Outer World 5%
AC Origins 0%
AC Odyssey 3%
No Man’s Sky 0%
Just Cause 4 5%
Watch Dogs 2 0%
Metal Gear Solid 5 3%
Far Cry 5 3%
Horizon Zero Dawn 14%
Ghost Sushi 0%
Other 14%

Breath of the Wild (Witcher 3 is a very close second).

Unlike every other game on this list, Breath of the Wild has no useless filler or BS fetch quests and it combines a beautiful world with a compelling story. Witcher 3 has some filler but it is filled with interesting characters, side stories, and situations and Geralt is one of the best characters I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing as.

Probably Witcher 3, followed closely by RDR 2.

Don't typically enjoy open world games. Tried to put aside my sinisterism and dive back into them early this year, just to see if my mind has changed. Played three popular open world games in 2020 and found them all mediocre.

The genre is filled with poorly designed games across the board, outside some rare exceptions. Sandbox design is for people who want immersion at the expense of everything else in a game. Gamers with a lot of free time, that want a game with less mechanical depth, demand, and challenge. Because they want something simple with fetch quests and easy A.I.

Outer Wilds

Genuinely one of the best experiences I've had in gaming.

I think PUBG is open world. That would be my pick.

BotW was boring and stale. Never played Witcher 3.

Ghost of Tsushima so far but soon as Cyberpunk 2077 comes out I'm sure that will be my final choice.

Even though Fallout 4 was a disappointment compared to it's predecessors it was still my favorite open world game of this generation.

~ MGS V was hands down my favorite... Musta put 1000+ hours into it..

~Middle Earth Shadows Mordor & Shadows of War we're both awesome.

The sequel was epic af until they ruined it by removing the orc pakcs.

*It had ~NOTHING~ to do wqith micro Transactions/real money..

You earne dmoney in-game= and bought legendary Ocr packs with the money.

Or Orc traits...

After teh update= you couldn't do anything with money and by the half way point money(Mirian) was useless..

~Farcry5 was my fav Far Cry since Farcry2.. Just a great map...

But Farcry has a major Loot problem.

As in = loot is pointless crap. But the stealth is top notch!

**i really liked Arkham Knight.. Too bad the story was generic as heck..

The RedHood! gimmie a break.. And Rocksteady claimed it was an original story..

yeah SURE IT IS. haha

**Breath of wild was OK but i don't respect my Ninentdo.

I gave it to my daughter.

Witcher 3 was ok.

Not as epic as people claimed..

The combat was annoying on console with This/that magic.

Similar to Skrim/Oblivion where you aveta equp 1 spell at a time..

Always bothered me.

Fallout4,,AssCreed,,JustCause were dissapointing to me this gen...

I'm glad to see HZD got some votes, that would be my choice as well. In fairness I haven't played many of the titles on this list but HZD was easily my favorite game I've played this gen. Not since Mass Effect was I ever so wholly sucked into a different world altogether.

Breath of the Wild is probably the best single player game released in the 2010s.

I've just realised that I did not complete a single one of these large open world titles this gen. Most I played for over 100 hours but after that it just becomes tedious and repetitive for me.

Anyway, I voted RDR2 for it's ridiculous attention to detail.

To be honest, I’m not a fan of open world games from the ones I’ve played. I like there to always be a set objective at hand without feeling the need to trail off too much. Feels like I can waste a lot of time playing open world which I can’t afford to really do.

Played RDR2, Witcher 3, AC Odyssey and Horizon Zero Dawn so I can only comment out of those four.

It's a close race between Witcher 3 and Horizon Zero Dawn.

And even tho Horizon has imho a better world building it does seem mostly empty and populated by machines and few bandit camps so I would say Witcher 3.
Witcher 3 world just feels more alive.
