I know, reviews have been out for a long time. I just sidegraded my 4790k to a 8700k a week or so ago, and got to overclocking it yesterday. 4.8ghz (haven't even tried to go higher) at ONLY 1.264v!!! I'm AMAZED. Stable on Aida yesterday for a few hours, with a HIGH of only 69c. I'm SO impressed with this chip. Can you tell by my use of all CAPS to emphasize?

Anyways...maybe I got lucky at the low voltage for this clock, which is awesome because I never seem to get the good bins. Anyways...just wanted to throw out how impressed I am, and maybe if somebody is on the fence they can pull the trigger a little easier now.

Thoughts?

@demi0227_basic: I'm sure it's pretty damn good. I have the i7 6850K 6 Core clocked at 4.5Ghz and it runs surprisingly cool with my liquid on the lowest fan and pump settings. Haven't really felt the need to go any higher. Everyone said I was an idiot for future proofing with a 6 core and a year later most new AAA games are able to use all cores now.

That's a pretty damn amazing clock for that chip, yeah? I was window shopping that chip last year for a bit...lot's of pci-e lanes. Are you custom loop or aio? I'm just running a Corsair h115i on my new chip. I'd do a full blown proper loop, but I just don't have the time these days, as an older guy.

@demi0227_basic: No that's not that amazing, the recommended OC is 4.4GHz for a 6850K. It's an Corsair AIO.

Also bench that shit with CPU-Z. I'd be curious to see how it is vs mine. I'd guess it's slightly faster.

@demi0227_basic: Yeah mine's in the low 4,000s and 500s, pretty close. You keeping it at 4.8GHz like a madman? I undid my OC completely because it just felt pointless. It didn't make a huge difference for gaming.

That's really good, considering how hot those things run.

You've perhaps won the silicon lottery on that boy.

Yeah, I'm happy with the clock, especially with the almost stock voltage! Temps are great...maybe I'll check out what she needs for 5.0, but from benches I've seen it takes quite a bit more voltage/temps. So 4.8 for sure 24/7, maybe 5.0 if I can hit it with 1.25/1.3 and it's stable.

Heck yeah. I've been building for 20 years and always seem to get a dud for the binning. I always read people getting better results. That's partly why I made this thread...this chip just seems very impressive. I still can't believe it only needs 1.216 volts to hold a 4.8 clock across all cores...to me, it's insanity.

future proofing is a must on my builds. I happily spend a bit more to get a few more years out of my rig. Just have to research and see where things are going. If the future is "more cores, more utilization of more cores" then you might want to get more cores than you were planning :D

only if you delid and pre meltdown patch

intel's toothpaste tim is a joke

ryzen+ is where my money will go

edit:

wow my cpu is nearly 6 years old and it's only about 25% slower than the 8700k

goes to show how much "progress" intel has made in like 5 gens worth of processors. To put things into perspective it would be like using a pentium 3 in the core 2 duo days......

A lot of people are full of nonsense when it comes to overclocking. They overclock to run a benchmark and clock it back. Or have insanely unstable overclock results.

Having high overclock results is one thing, having it stable is another. You can run a few benchmarks all you want at the end of the day, hell you can run 20 benchmarks and have no issue's but a single battlefield 4 match the next day crashes your computer. Overclocking is always wonky.

I would say try to play a bunch of games with it for a month time period and see if it's stable or not.

@demi0227_basic:

I upgraded from an i5 4690k @4ghz, to the i7 8700(non k) I was amazed at the performance increases in games with my GTX 1080. For example with BF1 MP my i5 would be pegged at 99-100% usage and my framerate would bounce between 60-90 ish FPS. Once I upgraded my framerate didn't drop below 140.

I have yet to get my hands on one, but everything I have been reading about the 8700K indicates that a 4.8-5.0Ghz overclock with minimal voltage increase is pretty much a given.

Still salty about the TIM instead of soldered heat spreader tho.

Even their HEDT lineup uses TIM instead of soldered IHS.

You're getting 140fps @ 1080p ULTRA? I get 100fps - 120fps @ 1440p ULTRA with my 6700K. The problem with 4 cores i5 & BF1 is that it only has 4 threads. I haven't played BF1 in a bit but from what I remember my 6700K stays around 65% - 70% load. There were tons of people that said i7 is a waste for gaming for quiet some years... although with new 6 cores i5 it's no longer a problem. i7's are great for high refresh rate monitors.

demi0227_basic: I don't think 1.264V is anything magical for 8700K @ 4.8GHz since it basically runs @ 4.7GHz out of the box. All you have to do is go into BIOS and set all cores multiplier to 47 (shouldn't even need any voltage adjustment). Newer chips are clocked higher out of the box while running @ 1.20V - 1.22V max. Still that's a big improvement over my 6700K which can only run @ 4.3GHz 1.250V, 4.4GHz 1.280V, 4.5GHz 1.310V Although I think that I got a chip that's not too happy about overclocking... But if I want to push 4.6GHz my voltage has to be set all the way to 1.340V - 1.350V (not worth it AT ALL honestly... this chip gets REALLY HOT above 1.31V) even with a decent cooler AIO w/ 240mm rad.

Try stress testing with Prime95 or OCCT and your temps will definitely get above 69C. What kinda cooler are you using?

Silicon lottery.

My 4670K is bad, no matter what I can't get past 4.4GHz but I keep it at 4.2GHz due to seeing little performance advantage. My i5 2500K was a beast at 4.7GHz with a Titan Fenrir.

You are late to the party TC :P I got one of the first ones, had to import i from Germany because no shop in Switzerland had it. The CPU is really, really awesome.
