Over 5 years since my last post. Completely forgot about this blog until today. As always, it's great to look back. Just finished another sizeable upgrade last night but have upgraded quite a few times since the last post.

Both the 1080 TI and the 1080 have been retired. The 1080 was sold and the 1080 TI got moved to rig #2. An ASUS 3080 TUF OC slotted into rig #1 for several months but was ultimately replaced by a 3080 TI in mid 2021. There's been a lot of swapping and upgrading since then though (including my first AMD processor in 15 years!) with the final setup as below.

PC RIG #1

Zotac 4090 Amp Extreme AIRO

Intel i7 12700

G.SKILL (Trident Z) 32 GB DDR4 3200 RAM (Samsung B die running at 3800 16-16-16-36)

2 TB SK Hynix P41 (with Windows 11)

1 TB Samsung 980 PRO

1 TB WD Black SN850

500 GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD SATA III

2 TB Samsung Internal HDD

65" LG CX

PC RIG #2

Zotac 3080 ti Amp Holo

AMD 7700X

G.SKILL (Flare X5) 32 GB DDR5 6000 RAM

120 GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD SATA III (with Windows 10 64 bit)

500 GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD SATA III

1 TB Crucial MX500

2 TB Inland Performance Plus SSD

2 TB Silicon Power SSD

Dell 27" 144 Hz Gsync monitor (S2716DG) + LG 27" 240 Hz OLED (LG 27GR95QE-B)

I just switched out a 1tb Seagate HDD for a 6tb WD Black. Have my eye on the 1tb WD Black 770 SSD as well since the prices just dropped dramatically.

My rig is otherwise quite modest:

HP Envy TE01

I5-10400f

GTX 1650

32gb Klevv ram 2666mhz

The proprietary 400w PSU limits my upgrade options, but I'm thinking of putting and RX 6600 in there. Would be my fist AMD gpu ever.

Main rig (going off memory so brands may be missing in some cases):

  • Intel 12700KF
  • 16gb DDR5/5200mhz (Kingston FURY Black)
  • RTX 3070 (MSI Ventus 3x)
  • 1tb m.2 NVME SSD (Western Digital Blue)
  • 750gbs in other random SATA SSDs
  • Evga 650w PSU
  • Gigabyte Aorus Master z690

Plan to upgrade to 32gb ram soon, and probably get a new GPU when Nvidia 5 series comes out in a year or whatever. this is probably a "mid range" rig now but it performs just fine for my needs

Laptop: 2020 Dell G7:

  • Intel i7-9700
  • Nvidia RTX 2060
  • 16gb DDR4
  • 256 gb SSD + 1tb HDD

This post was supposed to include the history of my system specs. Dunno why the rest didn’t come through. Glad to see everyone’s rig’s though. Anyway, here’s a trip down memory lane…

System Specs 2/2018 - present

by Keivz_basic on February 18, 2018 Comments

My oh my, how time flies. Over 4 years since my last post. It's great to look back. My hardware has changed so much over the years. My very first card being a Matrox G200, followed by a Geforce 4 MX 440, then a Radeon 9700 pro, and later the Geforce 8800 GT (amazing price / performance) on through as below. On the processor side, I started with an AMD K6-2, then an AMD Duron I think, followed by a Sempron 3000, then the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (an incredible chip).

There's been a slew of upgrades since my last post. I'm running two rigs now--one for racing games and the other for pretty much everything else. My 780GTX is literally toast--it self ignited in late 2016 after about 3 years of use. It was about time for an upgrade anyway.

PC RIG #1

EVGA 1080 TI Black Edition, 11 GB GDDR5

Intel i7 8700K

G.SKILL (Trident Z) 16 GB DDR4 3200 RAM

500 GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD SATA III (with Windows 10 64 bit)

320 GB WD Internal HD

6 TB WD Internal HD

55" LG B6

PC RIG #2

Zotac 1080 GTX Amp! Edition, 8 GB GDDR5

Intel i7 3770K

G.SKILL (Ares) 16 GB DDR3 2133 RAM

120 GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD SATA III (with Windows 10 64 bit)

500 GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD SATA III

2 TB Samsung Internal HD

Dell 27" 144 mhz Gsync monitor (S2716DG)

System Specs 1/2014 - present

by Keivz_basic on January 25, 2014 Comments

As previously noted, I had been waiting for the first round of next gen console ports to appear on the PC before committing to a GPU upgrade. So far, by the looks of things, an r9 290 or a 780 GTX will be sufficient to run next gen (current gen) console ports at 1080/60 for a while to come. I had been hoping to get my hands on an aftermarket r9 290 with their custom cooling solutions as well as the promise of Mantle, their beefy 4 GB of VRAM, and AMD to AMD console to PC ports. But their limited stock and (in the wave of cryptocurrency mining) their outrageous e-tailer price mark ups made it easy to go with the 780 GTX. I went with Zotac again with their factory overclocked AMP! edition and, thus far, couldn't be happier. 1080p/60 fps is a like a dream come true. My old 275 GTX lasted me 4 solid years--double what my 8800 GT lasted me. It was a great card to be sure, but it was time to move on.

Zotac 780 GTX Amp! Edition, 3GB GDDR5

Intel i7 3770K

G.SKILL (Ares) 8 GB DDR3 RAM

120 GB Samsung 840 SSD SATA III (with Windows 8 64 bit)

320 GB WD Internal HD SATA

320 GB WD Internal HD EIDE (with Windows Vista Enterprise)

2 TB Samsung Internal HD SATA

500 GB Seagate External HD

System Specs 6/2013-present

I upgraded my CPU earlier this year after assuring myself that the next gen console ports would be unlikely to require anything above an i7. This has meant little to my current batch of games as they all did fine with my E8400 (though GTA IV finally runs at 60 fps).

The CPU upgrade also meant a mobo and a RAM upgrade as below. Luckily, I managed to get a decent price on my old CPU+MB+RAM.

I picked up an SSD too, just to see what all the fuss was about, and slapped Windows 8 64 bit on there for good measure. Windows 8 is great and the SSD makes a huge difference in general system performance. Loading times are also improved, though that might just be the extra/faster system RAM.

Otherwise, I still plan on waiting for the benchmarks on the first round of next gen console ports before I commit to a GPU upgrade.

Zotac GTX 275, 896 MB GDDR3

Intel i7 3770K

G.SKILL (Ares) 8 GB DDR3 RAM

120 GB Samsung 840 SSD SATA III (with Windows 8 64 bit)

320 GB WD Internal HD SATA (with Windows XP Pro SP3)

320 GB WD Internal HD EIDE (with Windows Vista Enterprise)

2 TB Samsung Internal HD SATA

500 GB Seagate External HD

System Specs 3/2013-present

by Keivz_basic on March 21, 2013 Comments

5+ year old hardware still getting the job done (gotta love console ports)! I added 2 GB of additional RAM back in 1/2011 with not much change beyond that outside of some extra HDD space. I game mostly at 1366x768 with full effects/60 fps on my 32" TV unless of course a KB/m is called for in which case I use my 19" monitor instead.

I'm determined not to upgrade until I've figured out just what PC hardware is needed to decently run next generation console ports. For now, I'll stick with the below:

Zotac GTX 275, 896 MB

Intel Core 2 Duo 8400 @ 3.6 GHz

4 GB DDR2-800 RAM

320 GB WD Internal HD SATA (with Windows XP Pro SP3)

320 GB WD Internal HD EIDE (with Windows Vista Enterprise)

2 TB Samsung Internal HD SATA

500 GB Seagate External HD

Logitech Dual Action controller

Xbox 360 controller

Madcatz Street Fighter IV Fightpad

hp w1907 19" monitor

Sharp Aquos 32" TV

System Specs 2/2010-present

After two years I decided to upgrade my videocard to a GTX 275. The 8800 GT was a beast to be sure, but for 4x-8x AA at 60 fps it just wasn't enough anymore.

Nothing else to add, except that MS Vista truly is crap.

Zotac GTX 275, 896 MB

Intel Core 2 Duo 8400 @ 3.6 GHz

2 GB DDR2-800 RAM

500 GB Seagate External HD (My 4th one!)

320 GB WD Internal HD SATA (with Windows XP Pro SP3)

320 GB WD Internal HD EIDE (with Windows Vista Enterprise)

Logitech Dual Action controller

Xbox 360 controller

hp w1907 19" monitor

A small update. My ECS MB's 16x PCI slot stopped working all of a sudden this month. I'm now on a Gigabyte EP43-UD3L and have added MS Vista. It overclocks well so I've sped up my processor a bit just for kicks. So far so good. Still no reason to upgrade the core components... yet. 1440x900 has been my sweet spot...since 10/2008.

EVGA Superclocked 8800 GT, 512 MB

Intel Core 2 Duo 8400 @ 3.6 GHz

2 GB DDR2-800 RAM

500 GB Seagate External HD (My 4th one!)

320 GB WD Internal HD SATA (with Windows XP Pro SP3)

320 GB WD Internal HD EIDE (with Windows Vista Enterprise)

Logitech Dual Action controller

Xbox 360 controller

1 year and counting and my 8800+8400 combo is still going strong. My old 80 GB IBM died this month after 7 years of solid use. Its death was slow so data recovery was complete. I won't miss it though--it was extremely loud.

EVGA Superclocked 8800 GT, 512 MB

Intel Core 2 Duo 8400

2 GB DDR2-800 RAM

With current pricing of things, I don't see myself upgrading anytime in the near future. Here's what I've got:

My computer:

  • See signature

Kid's gaming computer:

  • CPU - i7-10700k
  • GPU - RTX 3060Ti
  • PSU - 750W Seasonic Gold something or another
  • 500GB M2 & 1TB WD Black
  • 16GB DDR4

Plex server (used to be a gaming system for the kids 5-6 years ago)

  • CPU - i5-4460
  • GPU - RTX 3060 (replaced the aged 980Ti)
  • PSU - some 600/700W Seasonic (can't remember without opening her up)
  • 16GB DDR3
  • 2 - 4TB WD Red, 1 - 8TB WD Red, 1 - 250GB SSD for the OS
    • I'll need to get more storage space soon. I'm creeping up on the 3TB mark on one of the 4TB drives and around 2.5TB on the other 4TB drive. Everything backs up to the 8TB....I suppose I should stop being lazy and get a second backup drive, too, just to be safe. I'd hate to have to re-copy over 5TB of movies and shows should something happen.
