Poll Waiting 8 months for RTX Series. Wait more or skip this generation? (15 votes)
Today marks exactly 8 months since the official launch of the RTX 3000 series and I still haven’t been able to get my hands on one. Granted I didn’t want to get RTX 3080 because it has low memory and isn’t future proof for 4K Gaming (which I am targeting). So maybe entertaining that 3080 Ti which will have 12 GB which isn’t much better but still better than 10 GB for 4K Gaming, other option is to get RTX 3090 24GB which seem extra expensive and maybe overkill on the memory side. That’s what I don’t get about nVidia they are all whack with their memory GPU configuration. Originally the 3080 Ti was supposed to have 20GB which would have been perfected but they decided to go against it, probably because it will hurt their 3090 sales. nVdia being greedy as usual. Other option is to go with the 6800 or XT which has the 16GB memory but lacks in Ray Tracing performance, their FiedelityFX in response to DLSS has yet to come out. But since I already waited 8 months, should I wait longer. Rumors of RDNA 3 coming out in Q4 2021/ Q1 2022. Believe me I can wait 6 – 8 months as I have plenty of games to play. But I have been following every other generation and I am shooting for 4K 60 FPS with Ray Tracing enabled with good quality Ray Tracing performance so thinking about upgrading.
Upgrading history:
2002 – GeForce 4 64MB DDR
2006 – GeForce 7600 GT 256MB
2008 – Radeon HD 4870 512MB
2011 – HD 6950 (BIOS flashed) to HD 6970 2GB
2016 – R9 390X 8GB – Sold it
2017 – GTX 1060 6GB.
So, as you can see I upgrade every other generation. Skipped GeForce 8000 series and got the HD 4800 series (nVidia GTX 200 series equivalent). Skipped HD 5800 series and got HD 6900 series. Skipped HD 7000 series and got a Hawaii GPU, R9 390X series. Skipped Maxwell, the GTX 900 series and got GTX 1060 series and no longer have R9 390X since 1060 6GB had better power/performance. Skipped RTX 2000 series and now should be on Ampere/RTX 3000 series if I follow what I have been doing for the past 18 years. Note, I did have R9 Fury X as an impulse buy but didn’t really game on it as it was overkill for 1080P so sold, also had 9600 GT as place holder GPU while I got R9 390X series so those two don’t count.
So, what do you guys think? Should try to get RTX 3000 series or skip a generation for the first time in 18 years and wait for RDNA 3/Lovelace?
Note, looks like my AMD and ATI /nVidia ownership is 50/50 with slightly more nVidia GPUs owned. But I thought I was an AMD fanboy according to some on these forums. :P
