Game Info

"Outnumbered. Outgunned. Under Fire. Take control." You have six days. Six days to rescue an entire country plunged into chaos by a brutal revolution. Race against time to control a dire situation that threatens to escalate into global war.

You are the legendary and fearless Operations Commander as you take command of the battlefield with your crack NATO squad. The destination is Southeast Asia. The time is now for you to take control.

Plot

SOCOM 4 is set in Asia. The player controls Cullen Gray, unofficially called the "Ops Commander," the leader of a 5-man NATO special forces squad deployed near the Strait of Malacca. He is accompanied by two Americans named Schweitzer and Wells, as well as two South Korean operatives, Chung and Forty-Five. The latter is reported to be "vital to the story." The plot stretches over a six-day period in two main acts. The special forces squad is said to face an indigenous revolutionary group known as the Naga. Zipper reports the story to be "beyond the typical bounds of military shooters."

Game Features

Squad Based Multiplayer - utilize team dynamics online with an all new 32-person multiplayer as SOCOM 4 reclaims the top spot among tactical shooters.

Dynamic Command - effortlessly command the battlefield by utilizing squad tactics to flank and outmaneuver your enemy.

Move into the Action - PlayStation®Move delivers high precision control over shooting, melee fighting and commanding your squad. Also compatible with the PlayStation®Move sharp shooter for increased authenticity.

Covert Missions

The first new element ties directly into gameplay and it's one that we're really thrilled about. In select missions during the solo campaign, players take control of female South Korean 707th covert operations expert "45." Acting as the team's primary form of reconnaissance, 45 slinks into various locales under the cover of night to capture valuable intel and sabotage enemy operations. Armed with silenced weapons and a handy stealth meter that lets players know how visible they are to hostile forces, 45 is a sneaky badass that adds a lot to the already-intense SOCOM 4 experience. We really think you're going to enjoy playing her missions and we're glad to finally let that secret out of the bag.

Single Player

  • Singleplayer is meant to be tactical and you can "command your squad"
  • Will Socom 4 have difficulty levels? Yes, for singleplayer and co-op
  • "Aggresive AI" in Co-op and singleplayer
  • No option to disable blood spatter and regeneration in singleplayer
  • No voice commands
  • No single player character customization
  • Player can "paint" targets for the rest of the team to focus on
  • Region Specific Special Forces. (SAS for England, Koreans for Korea, Aussie SAS for Australia, etc. Instead of the two seals in single player, Aussies will get Australian SAS commandos.
  • Weapons in single player start as base models and unlock modifications (There are 5 levels of modifications)
  • Can Revive Fallen Team mates
  • YOU cannot be revived by your AI team mates
  • Grenade indicators are in
  • If a team mate dies in single player the game resets to the last checkpoint

Bomb Squad

Competitive multiplayer has always been the core of the SOCOM franchise, and SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs takes it further than ever before with modes and options that both new recruits and veterans alike will enjoy. We've previously covered three of our four competitive modes -- Suppression, Last Defense and Uplink -- and today we're excited to unveil our fourth mode, Bomb Squad.

In Bomb Squad, Insurgents have planted a number of bombs around the map and the Spec Ops team must defuse them all before time runs out. What makes Bomb Squad special is that it features the unique Bomb Technician character, played by one member of the Spec Ops team, who is charged with defusing the explosives. He carries both an automatic shotgun and a mobile grenade launcher and is very heavily armored, making him a deadly force on his own; that said, the technician is still an open target any time he turns his back to defuse Insurgent bombs. Succeeding in Bomb Squad requires tactics, teamwork, patience and confidence to get the job done, all pillars of the overall SOCOM experience.

When can you get your hands on Bomb Squad, you ask? Well, you'll be able to try out all four of our modes on two maps in our upcoming beta! The SOCOM 4 Multiplayer Beta will include each of the game's competitive multiplayer modes -- Suppression, Last Defense, Uplink and Bomb Squad -- all playable on the maps "Port Authority" and "Assault & Battery". And of course, you'll be able to play each of our modes in either of their Standard or Classic variants.

The SOCOM 4 Multiplayer Beta will roll out in four separate phases. It'll begin with a small, private group and then expand weekly from there until it's freely available to everyone!

Here's the schedule for each of the beta's rollout phases:

  • On March 15th, a private beta goes live. We'll be contacting eligible players soon.
  • Beginning March 22nd, PlayStation Plus members will gain access to the beta.
  • On March 29th, anyone with a beta code included with Killzone 3 gains entry.
  • Starting April 5th, the beta will be freely downloadable to anyone via PlayStation Network.

  • You can level up from 1 up to 100
  • You also get merits like "Buddy System", etc...
  • Match making will be level based
  • Above those levels are 12 Ranks. These ranks can unlock weapons, gear items, character skins, etc…
  • Classic Modifier - Action you do in Classic are worth more exp. points than Standard.

2. ( Weapon Exp System)

  • Kills are worth more exp.
  • Each weapon has Five MOD levels.
  • You can turn off "certain" mods by going into armory.
  • Certain mods like "Extended Mags" cannot be turned off.

Example of Weapon Modification:

  • Mod 1: (Acog)
  • Mod 2: (Ext Mag)
  • Mod 3: (Low Supressor)
  • Mod 4: (Front Grip)
  • Mod 5: (Bipod)
  • Fairly realistic damage. It only takes a few shots, it doesn't matter what gun you're using, but moding your weapons will give you more tactical flexibility to your weapon.

WORLDWIDE RANKINGS in Leaderboards –

  • They've gone away from one top player in Global Rating.
  • In Game and Web Leader boards have different categories.
  • You can sort leader boards by stats (Games won, Games lost, Kills, Assist, etc…)
  • There won't be a way to find out who the number one player in the world.

CLAN SYSTEM

  • You can form a clan. 128 Max
  • Clan Challenge System is built in - Officers and clan leaders can enter the clan challenge lobby, and they can form a party.
  • The regular members then join the room where the officer/clan leader is. If there is more member than the match requires, then the officers can choose from the list who they want to participate.
  • Multiple officers can create a challenge. Basically you can have multiple clan matches from your roster.
  • The clan leader has the ability to add and remove players on the list prior to starting the war.
  • The minimum player count for clan challenge is four.
  • Once you get your people set. You can hit "Ready".
  • On the right side of the screen is a clan listing. It shows all clans status - Ready, Not Ready or In a challenge.
  • Select a ready clan and issue a challenge. It will bring out a preset list of clan challenges (Pick one you want). The clan leader of the opposing team will see the challenge. The opposing clan can access your ratings to determine if they want to play with you or not.

PRESET CHALLENGES:

  • Abandoned (7min Rounds)
  • Classic Suppression 4v4 Matches (Smaller Maps)
  • Easily Updatable to community's feedback.
  • Very flexible like 16v16 to a small map.
  • These challenges are rank.

STUFF WE CAN SET ON CUSTOM ROOMS

  • Weapons Set (Like Shotguns Only, Sniper Only, etc...)
  • Spawning Type
  • Revive (Respawn Turned Off, but can revive team mate if he dies near you)
  • Community can set 7 rounds max
  • Can set movements speed slower or faster

CUSTOM GAME MODE

  • Sniper Alley (8v8 suppression match, Classic rule w/ higher damage, 7 rounds 5 min a piece, takes place on BIG maps. Sniper Only with shotgun as 2ndary and smoke grenades)
  • Last Def Run And Gun - 16v16, 1 ten min round, respawn on, faster movement, damage reduction.
  • Tactical uplink - 16v16, revive on, no respawn, all weapons available, 2 ten min round
  • Freeze Tag - Same thing but Suppression, no respawn, revive your buddies, no weapon restriction, 7 five min round
  • Scrum - 8v8 suppression, no respawn, faster movement, higher damage, limited weapon, no sniper rifle, no frags, 7 one minute round,
  • More game modes to come.

CLASSIC CAMERA

  • The "True" Classic Camera will NOT be on the beta or the shipping version of the game. They really like closer look in the game. However they are making an option for a camera that looks more like the old SOCOM.
  • The higher names on your team mates where a bug. It is now fixed and it's closer to the head.

THE GRENADE ARCH & D-PAD LEAN

  • They are not simple to add back in, but they might look into it in the future but they're not making any promises.

PISTOLS

  • Will NOT come back in this game. One of the main reasons for this is the success of Fireteam Bravo.
  • Another main reason is the tactical reflexibility that it gives you.
  • They think that having two primaries is more effective and people will utilize more special weapons.
  • They haven't been really focusing on pistols or even considered about bringing it back in.

COVER MODE IN CLASSIC

  • D-Pad lean will not be on the release of the game.
  • Classic mode will have cover mode turned ON by default.

RADAR AND E-TAGS

  • The radar is in the regular MP maps.
  • The E-Tags WILL be on the game, in order to cut out any camping at the last minute. They say it makes the game more intense, more so than the old SOCOM. They say it makes final showdowns more exciting instead of people running around looking for each other.
  • All forms of E-Tag and Radar have been eliminated from "Classic" mode

MATCHMAKING Vs. ORIGINAL LOBBY

  • Their main goal was to get people FAST and playing to get together.
  • Lobbies will NOT be implemented

THERE THREE MODES - STANDARD, CLASSIC and CUSTOM

  • Zipper's created rooms are ranked, and players are not.
  • One of the reason user created ranked rooms are not implemented is because it cause too much of a split audience.
  • They don't want people creating games that they're good at and the others aren't.

DEMOLITION

  • Demolition Mode will not be on Beta or when the game shipped.
  • "From day 1 SOCOM 4 was all about moving forward and not looking back" - Travis Steiner.
  • "Just because the mode is not shipping in the game, it doesn't mean that they will never see it" - Travis Steiner.

PUST TO TALK

  • It's actually tap to talk
  • Tapping up opens the channel for 10 seconds for you to talk. Multiple People can access the channel at one time
  • They are looking for a different option

Characters

CULLEN GRAY // "OPS COM"

Birthplace: Classified

Affiliation: NATO ISF

Specialty: Command and Control

Weapon of Choice: ACR

Born the son of a naval analyst and a civilian geologist, Cullen Gray was exposed to travel and the military way of life from his earliest years. After graduating from the [Classified] military university with an outstanding record, he served active duty special forces [Classified] before being identified by NATO as a candidate for the Limited Resources Deployment (LRD) program. The LRD initiative was considered part of the New Warfare paradigm, which theorized that costly military operations could be significantly optimized by deployment of elite "troubleshooters" able to leverage only the resources at hand to resolve high-risk or remote field missions with a high rate of success.

Through this program, Gray underwent intensive field training within many Special Operations units around the world. Additionally, candidates were cross-trained in intelligence department programs, linguistic and psychological institutes and grueling course in non-traditional military doctrine by guerilla combat experts. Eventually the program resulted in NATO's International Security Force (ISF), a network of fast-response teams deployable anywhere in the world within 48 hours and backed by a state-of-the art communications and support network.

PARK YOON-HEE // "FORTY-FIVE"

Birthplace: Seoul, Korea

Affiliation: South Korean 707th Special Missions Battalion

Specialty: Covert Operations

Weapon of Choice: DK7

Lieutenant PARK Yoon-Hee entered the Republic of Korea Army after completing her education at Seoul National University (College of Law). As a soldier she took part in peace-keeping operations around the world, and worked with Korean police forces as a specialist on high-risk tactical operations. Records indicate her proficiency as a marksman and in Close Quarters Combat marked her for recommendation to Special Warfare Command training.

PARK got her start in the South Korean 707th Special Mission Battalion ("White Tiger"). Within eighteen months she was attached to the 45th Special Forces Brigade (Special Warfare Command) after the Korean military relaxed restrictions for female officers serving in active counter-terror operations abroad. During the [Classified] operation in [Classified], PARK and her team successfully infiltrated a terrorist-held airfield and neutralized the hostile occupancy with no friendly casualties. This is attributed to the loyalty PARK commands from her teammates. In addition to her quick thinking under pressure she is an expert in covert operations, CQB and has considerable experience working in hostile environments.

PARK has been noted as having a strong will and a tendency towards debate which has resulted in several instances of demerits for conduct unbecoming an officer. Still, given her impeccable service record and list of achievements these few occurrences have not weighed heavily on her overall prospects of a promising career ahead of her.

DION WELLS // "WELLS"

Birthplace: San Bruno, CA

Affiliation: U.S. Navy SEALs

Specialty: Demolitions

Weapon of Choice: SFCR-HW

Dion Wells is a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy SEALs, where he specializes in security operations, explosives and HALO. Born in a San Francisco suburb, Wells joined the Navy after high school as a diver. After serving on a submarine for several years, Wells tried out for the infamous BUD'S training where he was only one of fifteen candidates to make it through to the end.

After the completion of several missions in the Balkans and noted in particular for his heroic actions in the [Classified] operation resulting in the capture of twelve wanted war criminals, Wells spent three years training forces in Iraq and serving as a military advisor in NATO peace-keeping operations.

Wells is physically imposing and extensively educated, his interests including cultural studies and foreign military history. Despite his laid-back demeanor and patience noted in personnel reports, Wells has a solid combat history and is highly regarded for his ability to assist commanding officers with unit direction and tactics in the field. Self-considered as a "right hand man", SGT. Wells has established a strong affiliation with Operations Commander Gray over the course of several operations.

ERIC SCHWEITZER // "SCHWEITZER"

Birthplace: Tamaqua, PA

Affiliation: U.S. Navy SEALs

Specialty: Heavy Weapons

Weapon of Choice: ISR-N56

Eric Schweitzer grew up in a reclusive Western Pennsylvanian community, and records indicate a long and troubled journey through several schools and juvenile detention centers. He was accepted into the SEALs just three years after being recruited into the Navy as an EOD technician.

Schweitzer has seen extensive combat in South America and more recently in Central Asia, where he was distinguished for his support of allied revolutionary forces in Adjikistan as a field advisor.

Cynical and highly vocal, Schweitzer is nevertheless a competent operative, allowing teammates to overlook his attitude in most cases. Generally deployed as a Heavy Weapons Operator, Schweitzer is in his element when combat is at its most intense. Several reports in his file note that Schweitzer is often in need of strong leadership to keep his enthusiasm for engaging enemy forces in check.

CHUNG KWAN // "CHUNG"

Birthplace: Ulsan, Korea

Affiliation: South Korean 707th Special Missions Battalion

Specialty: Reconnaissance

Weapon of Choice: DK2

After a short career in the KNP's S.W.A.T division as an electronics countermeasure specialist, CHUNG entered the Korean Armed Forces at the age of 23. After two years he applied for and was accepted into the 707th SMB. Honed by his police experience, CHUNG brings considerable tactical and analytical skills to his work. Commended for his abilities as a forward observer, CHUNG was given an opportunity to join the 45th SF Brigade in their task to provide reconnaissance and technical skills for allied operations.

CHUNG is observant and controlled at all times, and shows an intense concentration and commitment to procedure in combat. He has 20/20 vision and teammates often report feeling like CHUNG has a "sixth sense" when it comes to anticipating danger.

He is currently assigned to a small forward-recon team commanded by Lieutenant PARK Yoon-Hee.

More info to come...

Does that work well for KZ3? I was actually thinking about trying to sell some books or find a way to make some money to buy that bundle. Lord knows I need money. :P

Are voice commands for your singleplayer squad supported this time? I loved that back in the PS2 games.

*sigh* I go out and make an informative thread and you can't bother to skim over it? :( Well, if you had looked at my first post, it says no voice commands for single player. Hope that helps.

Never bought a SOCOM game before but that special edition w/ nerdy fake gun is mighty tempting.

I did skim over it (emphasis on skim)... which is no-doubt why I missed your remark. No hard feelings... I still appreciate the time you put into it. :) Sounds like they got rid of one of my favorite features, but added Move/Sharpshooter and 3D support. Not a bad trade off.

Thats ok. Your average poster won't read all this. I made this for the hardcore Socom fans and hopefully they can take their good time reading over this. I know its a lot but when I'm this hyped about a game, there's no stopping me. :P

I'm one of those Grumpy Socom Veterans who HATES this latest installment.

No voice commands in Singleplayer was the final nail in the coffin. Judging from the gameplay videos I've seen, the optional stealth options has been completed removed. Socom 1 and 2 allowed you to covertly sneak around the level, this seems more Modern combat guns blazzing. Apart from a madatory sniper mision that will be bound to feature in S4.

Id love to be proved wrong after playing a demo, but for me, I Dont see this as a Socom Title.

Really excellent thread. Nice work. Still not getting the game due to what I consider Zipper ruining the series.

You know i am a long time socom player but i think its time to stop complaining about it changing the way it is. Yes they are not catering to the vets of Socom but you know what that number is not really that high anymore and 25-50k in sales is crappy for a company. They need to start offering what the majority want and they are doing that, ATLEAST they are keeping some sort of gaming for the hardcore fans. I admit losing lobbies and such SUCK! But the game wont be around if they cant keep up with the millions of sales other shooters are bringing in, and be that this is a PS3 exclusive games makes it all the more that i has to sell. I say HD remake of S2 will make hardcore fans happy and then they can go on thier merry way!

Does that work well for KZ3? I was actually thinking about trying to sell some books or find a way to make some money to buy that bundle. Lord knows I need money. :P

to be honest with u, its a lot better than a DS3, but i still prefer a controller. cuz i dont feel like holding the gun, sometimes im just laying down and playing lol u know

lol. It works awesome with KZ3. Admittedly a little better in SP than MP, but I get tons more headshots in MP than anyone else I play with.

They've said the campaign will have both. Unfortunately so far the only gameplay shown has been the stealth mission with 45 where stealth is basically mandatory and the opening mission where the enemy is already aware of your position (where stealth as an option is already out the window). So it's tough to say whether missions in between will be stealth but also allow a guns-blazing approach. In respect to no voice commands, they seem to be doing it all through the D-pad and as per my usual, I'm not going to knock it until I've tried it. Rainbow Six Vegas used the D-pad decently well to command squad mates.

I am pretty sure i remember seeing the first couple videos they said you can choose to do one or the other it was up to the player to choose how they wanted to take the level

In the video I saw, the guy asked if you could come in guns blazing and the dev told him he would die very quickly trying that strategy. So it might be possible, but extremely difficult.

Watch this video and tell me that co-op is not going to be freaking awesome! Also, here is a Bomb Squad preview. This game is shaping up to be an amazing game. I already know that I'm going to put in over hundreds of hours into this game.

Nice thread. Looks like a lot of work went into it. Too bad I have no interest in the game :P I'll try the beta and see if I like it but as of now its a no go. That was a bit dumb that they hype the beta up for Killzone 3 and all that gets you is an week over everyone else though.
