hey all

I am going back to japan to visit my girlfriend. Last time i went i got some amiiboos and were amazed how much people were willing to pay for some.

So i was thinking of buying collectibles in japan like retro games. What systems and games are hard to come by in north america that i can get in japan?

also if anyone has been to japan could you recommend me a good retro store?

If you find a copy of Metal Wolf Chaos on Xbox bring that one back, they go for like $150 here. I also agree with the PC Engine Duo + Rondo of Blood, Super Grafx + CD would work as well, you can get the super system 3.0 card pretty cheap for a NTSC-J system. If it were me, as I collect odd consoles, I'd be looking for a Casio Loopy, Bandai Playdia, PC-FX, Sharp X68000, MSX 2, and an FM Towns Marty. They don't get imported here very often, and most of them are at inflated costs. Same for the N64 DD and any of its games, especially Doshin the Giant 2 and Japan Golf($400 each for those two).

@osirisx3: The PC Engine/Turbo Graphx is very common in Japan. It had a big following in Japan with more of a cult following here.

If you're passing by Akihibara, Tokyo - don't forget to checkout Super Potato, they have cool retro stuff to checkout.

@osirisx3 hmm... I honestly haven't been to Osaka to compare the prices but I've found stuff I've been looking for in very good condition. Boxed, with booklet & cart in very good condition. :-)

It's worth checking out if you haven't been there. It's not not the main street, so it'd be best to Google for it's location before heading there.

Agree on his choices! especially for PC-FX, Sharp X68000, and Super Grafx!

I was just about to mention some of those classic Japanese home computers. I would definitely recommend checking out some of the Japan-exclusive home computers, like the Sharp X68000, PC-98, MSX, and FM Towns (although the FM Towns Marty console version might be better in that last case). These home computers have huge untapped game libraries, with thousands of games that were never released outside of Japan.

Also, as far as consoles go, I'd agree with the PC Engine recommendation. Along with the Super CD-ROM expansion, it also had the Arcade Card expansion which upgraded the system's capabilities even further.

@Jag85: I've been eyeing those japanese consoles for years now, they're just too far out of my price range to import them. Prices get bloated, then any kind of decent/safe shipping methods bloat the cost even further.
