Fairly petty, even if it's their absolute right to do so.

The Internet being what it is, they can't really stop it. If anything it actually made me aware of it, nice work I guess.

Nintendo squashes Super Mario Commodore 64 port which took seven years to make

Son of a peach.

Last week, after seven years of work, Nintendo fan ZeroPaige finally released a working port of Super Mario Bros. for the Commodore 64.

The achievement - and hard graft behind it - caught the eye of C64 fans, who praised the effort of recreating one of gaming's greatest masterpieces for the much loved home computer.

But then - of course - Nintendo swung into action. Four days after its release, Nintendo began taking it down.

Details of the port - and it's subsequent removal - have been covered by TorrentFreak, which notes the port is still available if you know where to look, or who to ask within the thriving C64 hobbyist scene.

But the file has been removed from the its most prominent hosting sites - and from the Commodore Computer Club website, where it was hosted.

The original Super Mario Bros can still sell copies on handhelds etc., maybe that's why Nintendo is acting so sour. The C64 version looks impressive, but it's not nearly as smooth and good-looking as the original. I suspect the controls are also a problem, since you press up to jump on most C64 games.

By the way, Great Giana Sisters was officially released by Rainbow Arts many years ago. It was a near identical copy of Mario, and Nintendo was really pis#ed off back then. This is round 2.

Now, how about an Atari 2600 port of Zelda BOW?? :) :)

It's their own fault for making it a Mario game. They could easily have released a clone with different characters; sure Nintendo would still have been annoyed but it wouldn't be the slam-dunk non-sanctioned intrusion of company property that SMB-C64 was. It's remarkable in the 7 years that no one realised Nintendo are the least caring+sharing company in gaming and if they released a Mario game they wouldn't be allowed to distribute it.

Typical Nintendo. I think it would be hard to argue this game hurts the brand or detract from sales.

Oh well good thing nothing can ever really be removed from the internet.

And they kept working on it even though Nintendo shuts these things down, they knew the risks.

And this is why Nintendo fans will never appreciate anyone's work other then Nintendo's own employees.

Programmers for Super Mario Commodore 64 port should have re-done the art work to show East Asian chef instead of Italian plumber. The theme should would be food related e.g. gathering food items or killing for meat.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Giana_Sisters

Nintendo urged the makers of The Great Giana Sisters to withdraw the game from sale, arguing that it was obvious copyright infringement. Time Warp Productions and Rainbow Arts immediately stopped the production and, at the same time, the game began vanishing from the stores.[5][6][7]

The annoying part, https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2018/09/all-successful-countries-copy-technology-and-methods.html

Taiwan and South Korea followed Japan by copying US technology.

When Rainbow Arts shamelessly copied a Japanese IP, it was blocked.

NIntendo and Blizzard honestly were both incredibly evil companies and that's become more obvious than ever now...

That's all I have to say about that.
