Yes, I went there! Despite Playstation being full 3D and the SNES being the pinnacle of 2D's, both consoles have their fair share of JRPG goodness! Also, Square Soft for the time has hit greatness on both consoles with Final Fantasy IV-IX (FFIV and VI were renamed 2 and 3 in the West).

Which did you prefer growing up?

Can't say... I really should get around to playing Final Fantasies prior to VII.

Nonetheless VII and IX are damn good games, I tip my hat.

No arguments there! Both masterpieces.

I had a Playstation, so I played more games on that than an SNES.

The Final Fantasies, Lunar, and much more were all great experiences. The SNES is a good console, but I have more experience with the PSX.

PS1 had more games I liked. But SNES had the best games of the two.

@n64dd: The only Lunar I played is Silver Star Story, so that is my default choice from a player perspective.

Wow I didn't know Gamespot brought back Legacy forum now known as Retro Gaming. That's great hopefully some of the other Gamespot members who use to be very active on the Legacy forums come back again. But anyways in my opinion I feel that the SNES had the better jrpgs. Something about the 16 Bit look and feel of them were always great and i liked the gameplay of them. Plus the soundtracks for the SNES jrpgs were the best for me.

At the time I felt like the PS1 was blowing past the SNES with their jrpgs. I was just so impressed with the tech and the games were typically much larger.

Over the years I've gravitated back towards preferring the SNES offerings. They aren't bloated and padded out like so many PS1 rpgs. They're more fun to go back and play, they aren't dragged down by load times and I typically find them more charming.

I was just going to bring up load times.

Neither of you PSX Kiddies ever enjoyed the greatness of the Soul Blazer series? Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma from Enix were the best JRPG's of the SNES

I would give the edge to PS1. Mainly because the PS1 just had many more quality RPGs to choose from. Then you have to consider that some of the better RPGs from the SNES were ported to PS1.

You didn't play the Soul Blazer series on the PS1, did you? How about Super Mario RPG? Ogre Battle was great, then there is EarthBound, Secrets of Mana,

SNES was what got me interested in RPGs with Super Mario RPG but it was mostly RPGs on PS1 that I grew up with. (it was also where I originally played a few of the SNES greats Final Fantasy IV/VI and Chrono Trigger) Now I really love both but I'd probably give the edge to Playstation as it has more of my favorites. (Lunar 1-2, Suikoden 1-2, Final Fantasy IX/Tactics, Arc the Lad 1-2, Breath of Fire 3-4, Parasite Eve, Alundra, Vagrant Story) SNES has great ones as well though(A Link to the Past, Lufia II, Breath of Fire II, Final Fantasy II/III, Illusion of Gaia, Super Mario RPG).

I still need to play some of the fan translated RPGs on SNES like the Fire Emblem games(really enjoy the series on GBA/GC/3DS), Rudra no Hihou, Bahamut Lagoon, etc.

Yes, I played all those games. They are masterpieces. Ogre Battle was also ported to PS1. I still think PS1 was a better system for RPGs.

The PSX definitely wins this fight. The SNES didn't have that many RPGs, at least outside of Japan - I'm not sure exactly how many RPGs never even made it here. I'll always remember the Playstation for being one of the first consoles to really embrace localizing a lot of JRPGs.

PSX by far.

Even though SNES had Chrono trigger and FFVI, PSX had more to offer especially in the west.

Suikoden 2, FF's, Bof III, Persona 2, Wild arms, Xenogears, Chrono cross,...

Earthbound and Chrono trigger means SNES wins this hands down.

SNES was still more varied in rpgs. Then when you factor in games from all territories with fan translations it isn't even close--snes by far.
