East or West, what's the best RPG ever created?

No poll, just list your choice.

I think I would have to go with Baldur's Gate 2 EE. The writing, the gameplay, the variety of dungeons/landscapes, the superb companions, the upper tier questing, etc., is all unparalleled with most other games of the genre. Not that it's perfect, it's got issues here and there, but overall it's just a masterpiece.

What y'all think.

It's gotta be FF6 or Chrono Trigger.

I don't know. For story i'd say the West is superior. For gameplay id say they're equal, but that's simply not true ever since the likes of Bioware died. So for story its the West and for gameplay its the East.

Only like 1-2 JRPG.

Of the modern ones UnderRail was my fav.

East. Chrono Trigger is probably my favourite RPG of all time if not my favourite game of all time. Some equally other great ones like:

- Chrono Cross

- Final Fantasy VI, VII, and VII Remake

- Dragon Quest VIII and XI

Shining Force series, Phantasy Star series, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia 2, FF8, Lost Odyssey are some of my faves.

Not hating. Love the game, myself. It's different from anything else in the series. You just don't hear peeps talking positivity about it much.

So even though you said you love the game you think someone mentioning it as a one of their faves is lol? weird conclusion to come to.

Xenogears, chrono cross, FF7 to 9 are the top of my best RPG list.

FF7 is.probably my favorite game all time, so that.

Golden Sun 1&2, FF-6, DQ-VIII and IX, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Xenoblade 1 and 3, Lost Odyssey, Suikoden II, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 are some of my favorite rpgs, so jrpg.

Chrono Trigger and FF6 a close second.

No fav, too many games across too many sub genres. If letting nostalgia decide, tossup between FF6, CT, and PS4.

Don't care much for either side of the genre anymore, but in general I enjoyed more JRPGs. Mostly the golden era stuff from gens 4 and 5. Squaresofts output, Phantasy Star, Shining Force, etc.

Recent years, basically just Soulsborne and Nioh, hardly rpgs anyways.

@hardwenzen: I agree with you for once... story wise Western devs usually excel, whereas Eastern devs (Japanese devs) usually excel at cool gameplay.

Dunno man, if someone said it to me, I'd be like, all good lol, no offense taken.

In fact it has been said to me, many times. I've defended FF8 more times than I can even recall. Got so many lols thrown at me, doesn't phase me.

In this instance though, my guy, it was more of a chuckle. like, hehe, i finally find someone else other than myself the actually likes this game.

FF7 and Xenogears

I didn't take an offense to what you said, just thought it was weird. But when you add context to as to why you said lol, one can see what you meant. Just lol on its own one is left to interpret it however they see it.

Favorite gotta go to planescape torment with bG2 as a close second. But otherwise I also absolutely love FF7,DQ8 and Ultima 7. So would probably give it to the west, but it is close though:)

Easily west, I don't like the jrpg standard loop even if I enjoy some games. From Torment to TES, modern masterpieces like Disco Elysium.

FromSoft is the only Japanese developer that balances the things out for me.

Chrono for the best, follow by Y’s VIII.

I think I’m the only one who doesn’t like FF7.

I like the US FF 2 and 3 and really liked 9.

But I never got passed FF7 disc one. It was just really boring for me

The best? Probably not. The most fun RPG I've ever played though.

I don't think i could pick just one. So many great games.

I'm replaying BG2 though (never finished it all those years ago. Never even started Throne of Bhaal) and DAM it's still good. I can see the graphics being very off putting for newer players but if you can get past that it really is genesis for many modern games.

It would be very cool if BG1 and 2 got a FF7 style remake. It would be amazing.

Midgar takes a while. The game really starts after you leave the city. So if you didn't get that far, not just right out of Midgar, but waaay out, needless to say you've missed what the game is all about.

It's criminal how little mention Xenogears gets around here. That game is a pure masterpiece, start to finish.

Panzer Dragoon Saga is my G.O.A.T. It's the most "get to the point" rpg I've ever played that still hits all the fanciful notes.

I'm also a big fan of Witcher 3, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger, Persona 5/5R, FFVII/VII:R, and Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 4. If Souls count, then Nioh and Bloodborne are up there as well.

Since my favorite game of all time is probably New Vegas I will go west. But I like both. Chrono Trigger, FF 6-7, FF 7 Remake, KOTOR II, Skyrim, Fallout 4, Dragon's Dogma, Nier:Automata are among my favorite games ever.

To be fair most of the JRPG's are just adventure games, they have the same amount of player agency as new god of war.

But either way Baldurs Gate 2, Planescape Torment, Chrono Trigger and FF VI

Its pretty damn even between JRPGs and WRPGs for me personally.

Planescape: Torment, Fallout New Vegas, Deus Ex, Gothic II, Arcanum, FF6...

I love JRPGs, but I'd probably only put one in my top ten RPGs of all time (Final Fantasy 6).

Everything else would be games like Disco Elysium (the best RPG of the past decade), Planescape Torment, Fallout 2, etc.

Yep, pretty much this ... nothing has come close to this games, either from Japan and definitely not from the West.

My personal favourite, is The Witcher 3

a bit more objectively, maybe Divinity Original Sin 2

UnderRail isn't for everyone. Heavy stat based and quite dry.

Classic Fallout sequel without the humor. More difficult, more depth.

The Witcher 3 and its expansions Is the best RPG ever created, and for almost 8 years has not been bested. Nothing before it’s as good, and everything after has been just a clone of it.

• Open-World: Elden Ring
• Action: Nier Automata (hopefully FFXVI will supersede it!)
• MMO: FFXIV
• Tactical: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
• Turn-Based: DQ11
• Social-Sim: P5 Royal

The Witcher 3 is my all time favourite don't really get the hype for JRPG the combat systems just do nothing for me.

Online: Guild Wars 1
Tactical: Thracia 776

Overall: Pathfinder 1e. You could build whatever you wanted without house rules.

Divinity: Original Sin 2, The Witcher 3 and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

West:

I prefer western rpgs: the Fallouts, Diablo II, Baldur's Gate I & II, Planescape Torment, KOTOR, Mass Effect trilogy.

The jrpgs I like are Final Fantasy IX, Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Trigger, Astlibra Revision. I plan on playing Yakuza: Like a Dragon at some point and I heard it's dope. Also Final Fantasy XVI looks like GOTY.

Star Field requirement to acheive the mod and ability of developer on Xbox it is possible!! Sony never let you have the real game possible from Todd Howard and Microsoft.
