because they're so fucking hard!

So I enjoy a good challenge when I play games, and for some of them, that's taken to the extreme. The genre that consistently provides me with those type of experiences are shmups, and one game in particular that I'm thinking of when I write this is DoDonPachi Resurrection. What's DoDonPachi? Well, it's one of the most famous bullet hell franchises of all time, and is the poster child of the legendary developer, CAVE. If you're any sort of gaming enthusiast worth his or her salt, you should already be aware of all this though.

So what makes this game so hard, *cough* see for yourself:

It's absolutely pure mayhem, and it will break you far harder than 99% of what most people label as "tough" these days... and I fucking love it. For shmups, I honestly can't play them unless I drink a coffee beforehand, as that's how focused I need to be in order to see everything, but DoDonPachi might as well require a caffeine injection because of the utter chaos and insanity it consists of. Not only do you need to dodge bullets, including squeezing between the tiniest of spaces, no, the real challenge is about obtaining a high score, and you do that by managing your specials and bombs. Deciding when to use them to cancel shots to increase your multiplier, and choosing when to use normal bombs when there's no escape, and managing all of that in your head while, again, dodging a rainbow of bullets coming in at ridiculous speeds, is what makes this game both so addictive and incredibly fun. Oh wait, did I say game? I meant to say games because DoDonPachi Resurrection is actually 8 games, each with their own particular difficulty setting, scoring system, and of course, rocking soundtrack.

Now imagine playing something like that for two to three hours in 80 degree weather at night, and you'll understand where I got that title from, because DoDonPachi will make you sweat.

So that's my favorite hard game. Do you have one or more that you enjoy playing despite how much they make you want to cry? Please, share.

Ikaruga is the ultimate 'try to hold your shit together' game

Also Dead Space 2 hardcore mode... there was no edge of my seat gameplay like when you are 3 chapters passed your last save point. The last 3rd of that game was a gauntlet... and after the final boss you need to fly yourself to saftey. That final flight was a nerve rek.

There are harder, but I agree.

Also, invisible Tetris drives me nuts.

@enzyme36: Oh yeah, Ikaruga is also a good one; it's like trying to solve a puzzle while lit on fire. Radiant Silvergun is another one of the same ilk, but it hasn't received a widespread release.

I seem to only sweat when playing xbone games, but I think it's because I overdo the drugs required to make them seem interesting.

Playing Street Fighter or Tekken against an opponent that's on your level can get pretty intense. If they're good I can easily play 20-30 matches in a row lol

@uninspiredcup: He barely cleared that with the gun. With shurikens only and no multi-ninja spell that is nigh impossible.

@uninspiredcup:That's why I stick mainly to Shinobi III. It's much more... pleasant.

@enzyme36: Yeah, I've never had the patience to get that far in Ikaurga either. Those last couple of minutes would probably wear my thumb out if I used a gamepad, lol.

I would sweat sometimes playing games as a kid becuz my rep was on the line!

Now never. Hard games just frustrate me but I stay dry. Wings of Vi is a tough game. I took a break from it becuz dying so many times in one game takes a toll on your sanity.

Uncharted 4 came with my PS4, and it's still in the shrink wrap. One day I'll play it, I swear... maybe.

Meh. I bought it and then later gave it away without even opening it lol. Wasn't really excited to play another Uncharted to begin with, and after hearing about all the long stretches of non-gameplay, I said fvck it. Not wasting my time, too many good games to play as is.

-

Ok, ok, serious answer. Ranked matches in fighting games. That shit can put me on tilt, especially if it's a promotion match, sometimes I just fall apart. Lately that's been SFV and Tekken 7.

Been a while since I've played a legitimately hard single player game. Aces Wild was probably the most recent one, and I just gave up on it.

@uninspiredcup: Yeah I've been meaning to go back to it but I'm pretty sure most people have beat it in the time my first playthrough is taking. I think I'm in the whereabouts of 30 hours and 3000 deaths on Mortal. For awhile I would complete 1 or 2 bosses a day then it slowly became just 1 section a day because of how hard the game gets. Now I'm at Myougi 2 which I swear is impossible with the default weapon (which is all I have). So part of me really enjoys the artwork, the soundtrack, the satisfaction of making progress in this game but everytime I play it now I make no progress at all or take a baby step.

Typical answer, but Dark Souls has made me sweat before. I remember trying to beat Ornstein and Smough about 10 times and having to stop because it was time to go to work. I was sweaty and pissed off that I didn't beat them. Should have gone to bed when I got home but stayed up another hour or two and finally beat them.

I really don't sweat while playing games, because they are hard. I might if it's some motion game though :P So I guess I chose something between them and go with Rhytm games? oO

Gears 4 Horde, when those "we barely made it" waves happen, they are awesome. Even the occasional "LOL" failures are worth it from time to time. The battlefield just becomes a mess of meaty chunks, every potential flanking by a heavy baddy ready to tear the team up finally going down sends praise to players that save their asses.

@lamprey263: No doubt. The first 25-30 is ok but after it gets crazy. I'll add Warzone Firefight Heroic or higher. Heroic is manageable but higher is basically dying every 60 seconds and the longer respawn on higher waves is brutal. Even req scorpion tanks are obliterated fast.

@ConanTheStoner: Ohh man I can play a casual match cool as a cucumber. But as soon as some juice is on the line... about a thousand more buttons get pressed, and the heart rate goes up by a factor of safety.

Shit gets intense.

Only title that really gets my blood and sweat going would be 1v1 in R6, especially ranked. Countless times its been 4-4, last 1 alive going against another solo. That relief when you win the game, the severe disappointment when you lose. Really gets the body going

Bullet hell shmups are always sweat bead inducing. A couple years back, I tried to 1cc Mamoru Kun; the difficulty increase with rank is so steep. I almost wanted to try not scoring well just to survive, but then I wouldn't get to the true last boss.

Another couple games worth mentioning are Vampire Savior and MvC2. Playing (good) fgs is like playing a musical instrument against an opponent. The faster the game, the faster you must play. These two games are lightning fast, making you actually physically work for your wins on a qualitatively different level than other fast and intense fgs (e.g. tekken, super turbo etc.).

Also zone of the enders 2 on extreme. Lol at the battle outside of aumaan.

For me, I should count how many games DOESN'T make me sweat. I have something of a sweaty hands problem. I even had to repeated wipe my hands and my controller in the middle of a recent game of Steep - because I was sweating so much the analogue sticks were literally slipping from my thumbs.

@valgaav_219: I agree on Tekken, back in the day I use to participate in local Tekken tournaments and those were some intense fights, one wrong move and you won't touch the ground until you' re k.oed.

For me it's Dark Souls 2, got it a few months back also my first souls game. Came in trying to play like it was your average hack and slash rpg in the beginning, I spent so much time at the bonfires that I may as well have had a sleeping bag and s'mores.
