P4 Golden is a good choice. Kinda forgot that it was this gen.

Smash Ultimate is not smash 4, it's an actual sequel. It has way too many dramatic changes to how that game plays to just be smash 4 for anyone that plays those games at a competent or better level.

New IP: Rocket League - Some of the most fun multiplayer gaming I've done ever. It feels fantastic to drive the cars and the speed at which you carry, and the depth is there to make it a mainstay hundreds to thousands of hours later. Flipping to move faster on the ground without boost, aerial game is nuts, the angels at which you create passes n shots, dribbling. It's by far and away the best soccer game, and for my money the best multiplayer game this gen not named Tekken 7. Frankly it might be better than that too.

Sequel: Devil May Cry 5 - Dante n Nero are back. Nero's improvements are godlike, and Dante, well he isn't as good as DMC4 Dante, but he's still better than anything else the genre has to offer. No action game allows for the level of player expression DMC does. At its best it's like playing a Tony Hawk game, except you're saucing on enemies by beating the ever loving shit out of them.

Prequel: Yakuza 0 - I don't think I played any prequels this gen of note besides this one. So it wins on Majima alone. Combat could be better. It's no God Hand.

Direct Port: Bayonetta PC - BAYONETTA AT LOCKED 60 FRAMES PER SECOND. LETS FUCKING GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still Platinum's best game.

Remaster: Nothing, nothing did a good enough job to warrant getting credit for a remaster. Technically the COD4 remaster is super good, but I didn't play that shit lol

Definitive Edition: Ori and the Blind Forest Definitive Edition - Corrects a major metroidvania sin in vanilla ori, adds dash n light burst. Really good.

Remake: Resident Evil 2 - RCPD in 2make is so fucking good, and I love the new damage model and take on Mr X. It's not as good as OG2, but its also wildly different from OG 2 which I do appreciate.

Reboot: Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild - Ocarina of Time sucks. So does Wind Waker. So does Toilet Princess. I'm shocked how much I genuinely love Breath of the Wild. The combat while still not good, has more interesting options for shenanigans which is much better than just being brain dead and no fun ever like the old games. The better puzzles and especially dungeon puzzles actually require some lateral thinking, a wild thing for a Zelda game at least. And the exploration end of the experience is basically second to none in a 3D game. I could do without so much shit things to find when I explore, but as a pure adventure thing it bangs.

Best Mod: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Infinite Heaven Mod - yeah I'm adding something to the list. When DMC5 community edition is finished, it will replace this, but until then this mod does a lot to fill in the holes left with MGS5 being unfinished. Proper difficulty scaling, so many more tools n options for the enemies, more aggressive spotting distances, speeds up the games bullshit timer shit on upgrades. Its fucking godlike. No open world game this gen could flex with The Phantom Pains actual sandbox, and Infinite Heaven only widens that gap. Brilliant mod.

Smash Ultimate is a sequel, not a definitive edition.

New IP - Nioh. Excellent combat, especially so for the genre in question. Want to shout out Shovel Knight tho, that game and its free expansions are some of the most fun I've had with an action platformer.

Sequel - Doom Eternal. Probably just because it's fresh on my mind, but it's a massive improvement over something that was already pretty good... buuut I finally started DMCV. About to wrap up my first playthough (which is basically the tutorial for games like these). I'm almost certain that'll take it. Bayo 2 is great, love the game. But while it improves on the original in some ways, it also takes some significant steps backwards.

Prequel - MGSV? I know the timeline has jumped around a lot, but that's the closest thing to a prequel I've played. And you know how much I dig that game lol.

Direct port - ...Ok, so as of this morning, I ordered a Xbox One X. I literally only bought it for two games that are over a decade old. Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2. They both see a significant resolution bump, but NG2 benefits big time from holding a steady 60 and no tearing. Hnnnnng! So that might be it for this category. Though currently, yes, Bayonetta PC all the way, and for the same reasons.

Remaster - Did I even play one? I think Team Ico collection was the last one I played, but that was last gen. Edit: Oh played a good ways into FFX remaster. Yup, it's FFX. Guess that takes it by default.

Definitive Edition - Again, don't think I played one. If I did, probably bought it after the fact and didn't notice lol.

Remake - Think REmake2 is the only one I played, but it's great. Still need to play Shadow of the Colossus remake.

Reboot - BotW for sure. Almost put this in for sequel, but yeah, huge refresh for this series and mostly for the better. Didn't think Nintendo had it in them to flex like that with a Zelda title lol.

A reboot is a re-envisioning by someone, i.e. the Christian Bale Batman is a reboot of the Batman live-action films, yes?

But then where does that leave Black Mesa? Is that a remake or a reboot? They applied their own vision to an established game and did many things different, but it's essentially the same...so is it a remake or reboot...or a remaster?

To me, Black Mesa is a remake, since it's based on the original Half-Life. Reboot is when a developer/publisher decides to reinvent a franchise with a new game. That's how I see it.
