Best Story on GameCube

Over the years, games have proven to be a viable storytelling medium, as they combine the multimedia elements and production values of movies with the length and depth of novels--and of course, they're interactive, which ideally lets you experience the story in a game as vividly as possible. GameSpot's best story award goes to the one game that's most striking because of the quality of its original story, its characters, and its storytelling techniques. Here is the winner of Best Story on GameCube:

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Silicon Knights

Eternal Darkness is one of the few games out there with a clear-cut literary influence: The game's distinctive horror theme, with its emphasis on a cast of characters balancing precariously on the edge of sanity, is clearly suggestive of the work of the prestigious American horror author H.P. Lovecraft. The main portions of the game even take place in Lovecraft's home state of Rhode Island, and other such references can be found throughout this unusual and unusually creepy action adventure game. Its story is actually one of the best parts about the game. Initially set in the present, Eternal Darkness actually chronicles key moments in the lives of a dozen different characters over the ages, some dating back to the dawn of history and all hailing from various parts of the world. All that they have in common is their fate to be instrumental, wittingly or unwittingly, in the elimination of an ancient evil. And they also have in common a mysterious book, the Tome of Eternal Darkness, which is key to the game's engaging and thought-provoking story.
