Best Game No One Played on GameCube

The game industry is extremely competitive--sometimes it's not enough for a game to be good in order for it to be a commercial success. In spite of their great qualities--and in spite of critical acclaim--each year, certain games fail to draw the kind of public attention they seem to deserve. The cause of this can be bad marketing, bad timing, an overly ambitious design, or something else. Here is the Best Game No One Played on GameCube:

Sega Soccer Slam

It's rare to see a sports game that will appeal to just about anyone with so much as a passing interest in either sports or video games, but Sega Soccer Slam is such a game: It manages to break down many of the barriers commonly associated with sports games, what with its colorful cast of comic-book-like characters and fast-paced, responsive gameplay. As such, it's unfortunate that so few people have actually even played Soccer Slam, a game that really deserves a wide audience.

The first thing that really jumps out about Sega Soccer Slam is its stylized look, which is also one of the reasons why it appeals to more than just the soccer fanatic. Each team of three players comes from a different region of the world, so they have an exaggerated, albeit almost stereotypical, cartoon look. For example, one team has a massive Mexican wrestler named El Diablo, while one of the European teams has a British punk rocker with a Mohawk. There's also an angry kilt-wearing Scotsman named Angus. Moreover, unlike in quite a few other games, these players actually have their own vibrant personalities, which are exhibited after they score a goal.

But where Soccer Slam truly shines is in gameplay. The mechanics are somewhat similar to just about every other soccer game, only more emphasis has been placed on making smaller passes and shooting the ball more often to keep the scoring high. Naturally, since Soccer Slam is more of an arcade-style game, players can also use special power-ups that enable them to speed up, fend off anyone trying to challenge the ball, or get more power behind their shots on goal. It's an incredibly fun experience overall, especially when playing against some human competition. So give Soccer Slam a try if you get the chance, and you won't regret it.
