Best Crossover Since Capcom vs. SNK

In case you hadn't noticed, in gaming, anything goes. Try to think of the most absurd combination of game franchises or game genres, and chances are, some game developer's already thought of exactly that and is hard at work on a design document even as you read this. Well, maybe not. But still, this year, we wish to commemorate one game in particular for having the audacity to cross two completely different universes together:

Kingdom Hearts

Publisher: Square

When Kingdom Hearts was first announced at E3 2001, many wondered if the strange marriage between two giants in their respective fields--Square and Disney--would produce something hideous or something lovely. To the surprise of many, this game was able to faithfully merge nearly all the major characters in Disney's vast universe with the well-loved characters of the Final Fantasy series. While it might sound like the kind of crossover attempt you'd read about in obscure fan fiction, these two universes were able to collide and produce one of the strangest games of the year--a game that legions of fans of Square and Disney found instantly appealing. In a year when surprising events like Nintendo selling its controlling interest in Rare and Enix merging with Square seemed par for the course, this odd mix came off seeming like the most natural thing in the world.
