Best Game Based on a TV or Film Property

Games based on TV shows or films used to be notoriously awful, almost without fail. Yet during the past couple of years, more and more games have managed to buck this trend, emerging not just as impressive companion pieces to their source material, but also as excellent games in their own right. In recognition of this entirely positive trend, we present our award for Best Game Based on a TV or Film Property:

The Thing (PC, Xbox, PS2)

Publisher: Universal Interactive
Developer: Computer Artworks

This year saw the release of many surprisingly good games based on Hollywood entertainment, but The Thing truly advances and contributes to the universe of the classic horror film it's based on, and thus stands out from the rest. Instead of just serving as a video game interpretation of the movie, The Thing instead picks up where the movie left off some 20 years ago and adds an interesting new chapter to the story. The Thing continues a great franchise that had been dormant for years, and it uses the video game medium as a means to really draw you into the franchise's horror/sci-fi universe. Furthermore, The Thing captures the mood and atmosphere of the John Carpenter film very well and translates the themes of the original film into important game concepts that aren't just window dressing. In the end, The Thing is a great game in its own right, and its effective ties to its source material make it that much better.
