Best Voice Acting

The quality of voice acting can make or break a game. Voice acting is becoming more and more abundant and increasingly important in games, and more and more recognizable actors and actresses are starting to lend their talents to bringing game characters to life. In recognition of this trend, we present the Best Voice Acting award to the game that had the hands-down best voice work of any game this year:

Freedom Force (PC)

Publisher: Crave/EA Games
Developer: Irrational Games

Though the standards for voice acting in games are definitely higher than they used to be, it was clear to us that Irrational Games' unusual tactical RPG Freedom Force for the PC had the best voice acting of any game in 2002. Freedom Force is inspired by classic 1960s American comics, and the over-the-top voices of its bold heroes and blustery villains capture the spirit of this setting perfectly. There's no question that much of Freedom Force's voice acting is overly dramatic--it's intended to be, to match the exaggerated, idealistic comic book heroes who inspired the game.
