Most Disappointing Game on PlayStation 2

At GameSpot, we believe that each game must be considered on its own terms. When we evaluate a game, we set aside any preconceived notions about what that game is supposed to be or how good it should have been, and we review the game on its merits. However, sometimes it's impossible not to approach a particular game with a certain set of expectations; some games have such ambitious concepts or such good predecessors that you can't help but wonder whether they could have turned out differently. The following PlayStation 2 game disappointed us most of all this year:

The Mark of Kri

A sense of disappointment about a game usually comes from that game not fulfilling its potential. This is usually reserved for sequels and remakes that fail to live up to the marks set by previous games in the series, but occasionally you run into a game that seems to be designed specifically to play against its strengths. The Mark of Kri is one such game.

The Mark of Kri is an impressive game from a graphical standpoint, bringing that Disney-like cartoon look to a game and pairing it with smooth, realistic-looking animation for both movement and attacks. The combat system in the game is also very well done, and it is innovatively designed to let you attack multiple opponents without having to fumble with the controls. The combat is incredibly cool, and watching the main character Rau execute his wide array of combat maneuvers is a lot of fun--which is why it's so unfortunate that the beefy Rau actually spends so little time in combat.

A good majority of the game focuses on a stealth element that isn't particularly well done and limits your arsenal to a handful of nicely animated but ultimately repetitive stealth kills or ranged attacks. Why is Rau skulking around so much when he seems like he ought to be cracking skulls? The Mark of Kri definitely had the potential to be one of this year's greatest games, but its relative lack of pure action has a very negative effect on this otherwise interesting game.
