The driving game genre was sparse this year, though a number of high-quality yet budget-priced offerings were released--and with little fanfare. Some of these featured exciting, arcadelike gameplay, but the most impressive were those that simulated their respective motor sports realistically but still provided players with the ability to customize the game for a less exhaustively authentic experience. Unlike last year, when EA Sports dominated the driving genre, it was comforting to see a number of publishers produce successful driving games. Here are the nominees for Best Driving Game of 2001:
