The simple fact that IL-2 Sturmovik wasn't called "Microsoft Flight Simulator" is a large enough obstacle to this game's commercial success. But IL-2's hurdles involve more than marketing issues. The game was developed by a relatively unknown company, and it focuses on a part of World War II that few Americans care for: the eastern front. The air war between Germany and Russia didn't involve any US forces, so it tends to rank below more-famous theaters of the war such as the Pacific, the Battle of Britain, and the German bombing campaigns, all of which have been settings in numerous flight simulators in the past. Nonetheless, IL-2 Sturmovik proved to be a flight simulator that ranks among greats such as Falcon 3.0 and Aces Over the Pacific. Besides, since the eastern front is a theater of war that hasn't been previously explored in flight sims, IL-2 Sturmovik successfully offers something new to even the most seasoned veterans of the genre.
And since it features such things as volumetric clouds, atmospheric lighting, and weather effects, the game's graphics are without a doubt the most beautiful among any combat flight sim to date. Additionally, IL-2's sense of realism is further enhanced by superbly detailed aircraft models that display chipped paint and moving control surfaces, as well as true-to-life weapon effects such as tracers and smoke trails. But beyond that, it's IL-2's incredibly true-to-life damage modeling that really sets this sim apart. It even offers scalable difficulty to accommodate everyone from casual players to more-serious living room pilots. It's clear that IL-2 Sturmovik is destined to be a classic.
