We came, we saw, we wrote impressions down. GameSpot descended on Los Angeles on May 10 to attend the annual gathering of game developers, publishers, journalists, press-relations agents, and entertainers that is E3. E3 may seem like nothing more than hype and inflated hopes, but it does mean a lot to those involved in the electronic games industry. The noticeably large presence of international publishers and journalists reminded us that gaming has universal appeal and that it's a global community - something we sometimes forget.
Many pundits believed that this year's E3 would signal the decline of computer gaming. In truth, although some new console games and systems generated great buzz, PC gaming didn't exactly curl up in a ball to die. We editors actually had a tough time deciding which games to put on our list - there were so many - and we fought tooth and nail over the candidates. But we finalized our picks and can finally bring them to you.
Before getting to the games, we should tell you a few things. First, some games that deserve to be on our list are close to release, so we didn't include them. For example, Dark Reign 2 definitely looked good, but we didn't include it because it'll be out soon. In addition, in last year's E3 wrapup feature, we had decided not to include any games that had appeared at the previous E3. This year, we decided to abandon that rule. We also decided to go one step further and give progress reports on last year's top ten games of the show. Last but not least, we should mention that our top top ten and best-of-genre games do not appear in any particular rank or order. These choices are based on our firsthand impressions; although these games all seemed great at the show, some of them may turn out differently when released.
