MOST DISAPPOINTING GAME

At GameSpot, we believe that each game must be considered on its own terms. When we evaluate a game, we set aside any preconceived notions about what that game is supposed to be or how good it should have been, and we review the game on its merits. However, sometimes it's impossible not to approach a particular game with a certain set of expectations--some games have such ambitious concepts or such good predecessors that you can't help but wonder whether they could have turned out differently. The following game disappointed us most of all this year:

Luigi's Mansion

Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo

It's not that Nintendo's GameCube launch game, Luigi's Mansion is a bad game--we wouldn't have scored it as highly as we did if that was the case. But when you take a look at Nintendo's track record for launch software--a track record that contains some of the greatest games ever made--Luigi's Mansion's five to ten hours of simplistic gameplay and lack of replay value makes it a real disappointment.

The charm of playing a game with Luigi at the helm was definitely a nice touch, but the game's shortlived nature and lack of serious challenge causes it to get left in the dust. It's almost overkill to say it, but we'll say it anyway just to make the point clear: Luigi's Mansion is no Super Mario 64. It's also no Super Mario World, Super Mario Advance, Super Mario Land, or Super Mario Bros. Let's hope Luigi's Mansion isn't a sign of things to come on Nintendo's new console.
