The Best of the Game Boy Advance

Creating Game Boy Advance games is admittedly much easier than making games for a 3D console. Because of this, the handheld market is often flooded with piles of games that are here today and gone tomorrow. With this in mind, this week's Game Collector comes as an especially important service to our readers. Instead of sifting through hundreds of Game Boy Advance reviews and previews, use this feature as a checklist for your Game Boy Advance library and know that every last game included here is well worth the money spent.

When all is said and done, Circle of the Moon is a game that really picks up where Symphony of the Night left off and stands out as one of the best portable adventures ever created. Anyone craving an amazing 2D adventure--not just Symphony of the Night fans--would be absolutely foolish to pass on this one. It sticks fairly close to the Symphony formula while adding a small collection element that adds more replay value into the equation.

Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 - Game Boy Advance (2002)

Super Mario World is one of the greatest games ever made. The Game Boy Advance version adds a handful of amenities to cater a bit more to the portable crowd, but these changes serve only to enhance an already extraordinary game. New multiplayer options would have been nice, but in the end, this is a game that no Game Boy Advance library should be without and a game both young and old will adore.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 - Game Boy Advance (2002)
Street Price: $36.84

With the great impression that Tony Hawk 2 for the GBA made on many gamers, Vicarious Visions could have easily just thrown the Tony Hawk 3 levels into the same exact game and still have a quality title. Instead, it went the extra mile and included an improved trick system, improved graphics, multiplayer support, and a create-a-skater mode, creating an exceptional game and maintaining the Tony Hawk tradition of perpetually creating better games.

Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 - Game Boy Advance (2001)
Street Price: $18.19

A fully licensed product, Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 includes riders, sponsors, and bikes taken straight from the world of professional BMX competition. Unlike Activision's competitor, Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX, the GBA version of Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 makes no compromises in re-creating the experience of its console cousins. In all areas--gameplay, graphics, sound, and overall longevity--Full-Fat (the game's developers) and Acclaim have literally created a handheld miracle.

Advance Wars - Game Boy Advance (2001)

Advance Wars is a highly balanced game that is easy to learn but full of strategy. Whether you excel with land, sea, or air units, you can usually find a way to exploit your own inherent strengths in battle. Advance Wars is deep and easy to learn, and it contains a level of replay rarely witnessed in handheld gaming. Whether intentional or not, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems have created the consummate handheld strategy sim by which all others will now be measured.

Wario Land 4 for the Game Boy Advance is an excellent example of a 2D platformer done right. If you're looking for a quality 2D platformer for your Game Boy Advance, look no further. As Nintendo's first platforming game developed solely for the GBA, it shines in all the right places. The gameplay is tight and varied, the graphics are detailed and bright, and the sound is second to none.

With the US debut of Fire Pro Wrestling on the Game Boy Advance, the western hemisphere can now check out what it's been missing since the days of the SNES. It has made the transition from Japan to the US extremely well. When all the superfluous gimmicks and options are tossed aside and the comparisons are made, it shines as an enjoyable, solid wrestling game that will provide hours upon hours of entertainment to fans of the genre.

Lady Sia - Game Boy Advance (2001)
Street Price: $16.82

Viewed individually, each of the design elements in Lady Sia (backgrounds, character design, bosses, music, sound effects, control, and secrets) isn't necessarily noteworthy in and of itself. However, taken as a whole, they form the recipe for a spectacular action game. The gameplay is inviting, the characters are charming, and the challenge level is just right, while the inclusion of a strong female character directs the game toward all age and gender groups.

Mario Kart Super Circuit - Game Boy Advance (2001
Street Price: $24.99

Mario Kart Super Circuit is more of a remake of the original Super Nintendo game than a sequel to Mario Kart 64 for the Nintendo 64. This is to be expected, since the Game Boy Advance hardware that Mario Kart Super Circuit runs on is essentially the same as the Super Nintendo's. The end result is a game that not only visually resembles Mario Kart, but also sounds and plays just like one of the most memorable racing games of all time.
