We all know that too much sun can be bad for the skin. Now that it's officially summertime, we can think of no better way to protect our fair complexions than to hunker down indoors with some of our favorite games. The following 10 video games were all released about a year ago--in that prehistoric era before the Xbox and the GameCube--and we still remember them fondly. And now that you can get most of them for real cheap, it's your perfect chance to stock up on some of 2001's greatest summer games that you might have missed the first time around. You know, when you were wasting valuable gaming time out on the beach, or barbecuing, or something.

Make all the happy sunshine go away with Twisted Metal: Black, the preeminent car combat game for the PS2. This dark, seriously twisted game packs tons of action and some really great graphics. You can get it for nice and cheap these days, and it still holds up great one year after its original release.

There's nothing like driving at high speeds with the top down on a warm summer day. That can be pretty expensive, though, so your next best bet is to get yourself a nice, cheap copy of Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, the most complete racing video game to date. The graphics in this one remain some of the best the PS2 has to offer.

This lighthearted 3D platformer looks and plays great, and its cute, colorful graphics gives you that warm summer feeling...even if you're sitting at home in the dark, playing long into the night because Klonoa 2 is so darned addicting. It's still one of the finest platformers available for the PS2. Just because he's some crazy long-eared cat doesn't mean you shouldn't give Klonoa a chance.

If you plan on pulling some late-night gaming sessions this summer, then Resident Evil: Code Veronica X ought to keep you wide awake. This one's a remake of a game originally published for the Dreamcast, but adds improved graphics and new scenes. It's soaked with gore and loaded with thrills, and remains arguably the best Resident Evil to date.

This ain't your average basketball game. Take a game of street hoops and infuse it with some seriously crazy tricks and you get NBA Street, a no-holds-barred basketball competition that's still one of the most fun sporting experiences to be had on the PS2. Even if you don't normally care for basketball games, this one's worth checking out.

Why risk bodily harm when all the fun of freestyle BMX biking can be had at such a low, low price? Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX 2 takes the series in new directions and features some rather innovative changes to the conventional extreme sports genre. Like other extreme sports games, just about anyone can enjoy this one--it's just plain fun to play.

Sonic's last hurrah for the Dreamcast is a solid follow-up to one of the most beloved Dreamcast launch games. If you've got a hankering to take the blue hedgehog for a spin, then dust off your Dreamcast and pick up Sonic Adventure 2 while you still can. The Last Blade 2 is one of the last great fighting games for the Dreamcast, and one of the last great fighting games from that famous fighting game manufacturer, SNK. Like many of SNK's games, this one's loaded with style and features great controls and deep gameplay. It's also got an original setting and some interesting characters. Paying 20 bucks for the Dreamcast version beats paying hundreds for the Neo Geo original!

It's still the best original action game for the Game Boy Advance. Now that the GBA and Castlevania itself are cheaper than they used to be, even if you bought a GBA just to play this game, it'd still be a great deal. But money should be no object--we're talking about a climactic battle between you and Dracula here.

OK, if you haven't bought a GBA for Castlevania, then you need to get one for Advance Wars--one of the most addicting, most enjoyable strategy games of last year, on any platform. This one's surprisingly fun and surprisingly deep. We haven't stopped playing Advance Wars for months, and you owe it to yourself to give it a shot.
