Fighting Game Classics

Fighting games have been a staple of video games since Karate Champ hit the arcades back in 1984. The genre has changed very little since its inception, but it hasn't stifled the sales of its games one bit. Literally dozens of fighters are released each year, so it's entirely possible that those who are interested could have missed out on some great games because of oversight or a lack of funds. That's where this week's Game Collector comes into play. We have searched the Web to find you the best deals on fighting games that we have in our collections and that we believe you should have in your game collection as well.

Namco's Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast has been regarded as the best 3D fighter ever since its release alongside the launch of the console. In addition to having some of the most interesting characters to be found in a fighting game, Soul Calibur's balance of offensive and defensive techniques help it appeal to a broad audience. Its absolutely stunning graphics don't hurt, either. It's hard to find Soul Calibur in stores these days, but with one click, you can find the best prices on the game anywhere.

If you're into collecting video games, acquiring all the Tekken releases has never been as affordable.

Considered by many to be the best game in the series thus far, Tekken 3 has more characters, stages, and gameplay modes than any releases in the series that came before it. The beat-'em-up mode, called Tekken Force, lets you maneuver one of the game's many characters through a side-scrolling world, taking on multiple ninjas at once. Tekken 3 also introduces several new characters to the game such as Dr. Boskonovitch and the capoeira dancer, Eddy Gordo. With its addictive head-to-head mode, Tekken 3 is one great party game. If you haven't picked it up yet, now is a good time since the prices are low.

As one of the precursors to Street Fighter II, Street Fighter Alpha 2 included all of the new characters that debuted in the original Street Fighter Alpha including Adon, Birdie, Charlie, Dan, Guy, and many more. Using the solid SFII fighting engine with the added feature of the alpha meter, Alpha 2 is one of the most comprehensive of all the 2D Street Fighter games. If you're a fan of fighting games, you owe it to yourself to add Alpha 2 to your collection.

As one of Capcom's first collaborative efforts, Marvel vs. Capcom brings the best characters from both companies into one tight fighting game. In addition to the usual suspects like Chun Li, Zangief, Spider-Man, and Captain America, Capcom's nonfighting game characters like Mega Man and Strider Hiryu are included in the game. The same tag-team fighting system and tandem supermoves found in Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter return in Marvel vs. Capcom, making the game as deep as it is fun. If you're into Marvel comics and fighting games, there's no better game to own.

The Neo Geo Pocket Color may not be as popular as the Game Boy Color, but it still has a healthy number of quality games such as SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium. While it is still considered one of the best handheld fighting games ever, finding a copy of Match of the Millennium is no easy task. Considering the Neo Geo's system was discontinued in the US some time ago, getting your own copy of this game will only become more difficult as time wears on. If you're one of the few lucky ones to have bought the Pocket Color, this is your chance to pick up one of the system's best games.

Long considered the best game in the series, Mortal Kombat II continues where the story left off in the original and brings a host of new characters to the series such as Jax, Mileena, Kitana, Baraka, Kung Lao, and Reptile. In addition to the new characters, the game also includes new forms of the fatality called babalities, which transform the opposing fighter into an infant. Mortal Kombat II features the same gameplay mechanics as its predecessor, but with new fatalities and a handful of new characters to master, it stands as the shining moment of the series. If you have an old Sega Genesis lying around collecting dust, there are few games more worthy of bringing it out of hibernation than Super Street Fighter II. Four new characters were added to the Genesis version including Cammy, Fei Long, Dee Jay, and the professional wrestler T. Hawk. With nearly arcade-perfect graphics and group battles for up to eight fighters, Super Street Fighter II may be old, but it still packs quite a punch. Retro gamers looking for one of the best fighting games ever to grace the Genesis would be foolish to pass up these prices.
