Platforming Classics

Hot on the heels of our Question of the Week in which we chose the best platforming games ever, we bring you the best deals on classic platforming games anywhere on the Web. Normally the source of a hardware manufacturer's mascot, platforming games have become some of the most collected video games in existence. We've left no stone unturned to deliver outstanding prices on some of the most sought-after platform games ever released.

Super Mario 64 - Nintendo 64 (1996)

There's not much to say that hasn't already been said about legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto's first foray into 3D games. It set the precedence that all other developers of 3D games have followed and established the genre that would be known as the 3D platformer. After almost five years, the game's elegant simplicity and top-notch level design has yet to be topped. Most may have bought this game already. But for those who haven't, this entry is for you.

Crash Bandicoot - Sony PlayStation (1996)
Street Price: $12.95

Naughty Dog may have moved on to greener pastures, but the development house's first game for the PlayStation still stands as one of the console's best platforming games. The original Crash introduced the marsupial's spin-and-smash gameplay mechanics that continue to be used in the series today. Crash perfected the 3D platformer on rails and provided Sony with a face consumers could associate with the PlayStation. There aren't as many copies of this game out there as you might think, so jump on this deal while you can.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Sega Genesis (1991)
Street Price: $2.99

Regardless of whether you're a fan of platforming games, the first Sonic is a prerequisite for the catalog of any aspiring game collector. The speed and intelligent level design included in Sonic the Hedgehog still facilitate plenty of thrills, and at this low price, there's no excuse for not procuring your own copy. With six levels to blast through and just as many hidden sectors to discover, Sonic is worthy of dusting off your old Genesis for.

Ape Escape - Sony PlayStation (1999)
Street Price: $10.95

Everyone loves monkeys, and Ape Escape is loaded with more primates than an archeology museum. As the first game to utilize Sony's Dual Shock controller, Ape Escape's control scheme is almost as inventive as the game's monkey-collecting gameplay. Ape Escape didn't fly off store shelves when it was released, so it can be hard to track down copies of the game. But platforming fans will be the first to tell you, however, that it's one of the best 3D platformers from the last generation.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe - Game Boy Color (1999)
Street Price: $19.99

As an updated remake of the platforming classic Super Mario Bros. from 1985, Deluxe brings a lot more to the table than just rehashed graphics and gameplay. In addition to a near-perfect conversion of the original, there's a challenge mode that adds objectives to the game's levels, a versus mode lets you race from one end of the level to the next, and the lost levels lets you play several sections of Super Mario Bros. 2. With all these modes packed into one game, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is still a bargain at full price.

Super Mario World - SNES (1991)
Street Price: $6.50

Super Mario World was a packed-in launch game for the SNES so if you've picked up a used console you may have missed out on Mario's first excursion in 16-bits. Super Mario World was the first Mario game to encourage exploration thanks to multiple paths that reach the same end. Now 10 years old and a certified classic, getting someone to cough up their copy can be difficult, but we've managed to scare up a few precious carts so get them while you can.

Klonoa: Door to Phantomile - Sony PlayStation
Street Price: $18.99

If Klonoa had been released on a console with a younger demographic, it would have sold through the roof. As it stands, Namco failed to adequately promote the game, and it got lost in the third-party shuffle that is the PlayStation's software library. This has made it difficult to find one of the best 2.5D platforming games ever made. Thankfully, we've done the hunting for you, finding great deals on a game no one should be without. While Klonoa's cute exterior may turn off some, the gameplay is extraordinarily deep and fun.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Sony PlayStation (1997)
Street Price: $17.98

Considered by many to be the best in Konami's long-running vampire-hunting series, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is yet another example of an excellent PlayStation game that never gained mass-market success. Symphony of the Night features a blend of the traditional jump-and-whip gameplay mechanics the series is known for and Metroid-influenced controls. Due to the game's relative lack of popularity, finding a copy of the game isn't easy. Finding the game anywhere else at this price is practically impossible.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver - Sega Dreamcast (2000)
Street Price: $9.99

Return to Nosgoth is the sequel to the PlayStation smash hit, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. Finding a copy of Soul Reaver for the Dreamcast can prove challenging because of the game's limited production run. But anyone who's played the game will attest to its quality and its genuinely disturbing dark tone. If you're wondering why people are so upset that Soul Reaver II was cancelled for the DC, now's the perfect time to find out. It's selling at an unprecedented low price.

Spyro the Dragon - Sony PlayStation (1998)
Street Price: $13.67

Some would argue that Spyro was a bigger mascot for the PlayStation than Naughty Dog's orange marsupial, Crash. But one point that can't be argued is whether the original Spyro was a good game. As one of the first free-roaming 3D platformers for the PlayStation, Spyro managed to capture its own feel and style--resulting in a game that was simple enough for kids to get into but deep enough for older players to appreciate. It isn't getting any easier to find copies of Spyro the Dragon, but we managed to find a few coveted copies at a great price.
