Collect M-Rated Video Games

Below you will find games that aren't suitable for those under 17. But for our adult readers, this week's Game Collector will serve as an excellent guide to adding to their collections of mature games with suggestive themes, exorbitant amounts of gore, and all the other adult stuff that's commonly found in M-rated games. If you've been holding out for prices to drop on the classics or waiting for the right opportunity to satiate your guilty pleasures, this week's Game Collector is for you.

Grand Theft Auto 2 is, for the most part, a collection of enhancements to the original game. The graphics have been redone, the music is different, there is a slew of new weapons, the mission structure is a bit more complex, and the city feels a bit more alive. If you loved the car-jacking gameplay of the first game but wished there were just a bit more variety in the mission structure, then GTA 2 is just what you're looking for.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy - Sony PlayStation (1996)
Street Price: $10.00

No collection of M-rated games would be complete without a version of the rating's pioneer, Mortal Kombat. In Mortal Kombat Trilogy, the entire Mortal Kombat series (and more) is on one disc. Die-hard fans will lose their heads over the new moves, the new finishing techniques, and the new secret character. Mortal Kombat Trilogy keeps the two-on-two and eight-player tournament mode (found in Ultimate MK3) and adds a three-on-three battle, which keeps the fight going for quite a long time.

Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion - Nintendo 64 (2000)

For Acclaim's fourth and final foray into the Turok universe on the Nintendo 64, it decided it would attempt to combine all the things players liked about the first three games into one cohesive shooting experience. In many ways, the company has accomplished just that, and Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is a fitting way to finish off the Nintendo 64 franchise in style. If you enjoyed previous Turok games, Shadow of Oblivion should be a part of your collection.

Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix - Sony PlayStation (2001)
Street Price: $29.98

As a prequel, Fear Effect 2 retains many of the traits that defined its predecessor, such as Resident Evil-style gameplay, full-motion animated backgrounds, and a Hollywood-inspired presentation. Clocking in with more than 40 hours of gameplay, this chapter delves into the histories of the series' stars Hana, Glas, and Deke while simultaneously presenting a story of espionage and supernatural villainy that ultimately surpasses the original game's story in terms of both shock value and excellence.

Dino Crisis 2 - Sony PlayStation (2000)
Street Price: $27.50

Unlike its predecessor, Dino Crisis 2 successfully steps away from the shadow of Resident Evil by ditching the tired formula of the original in favor of more action-orientated gameplay. An original, enjoyable experience that can no longer be considered just another entry in the survival-horror genre, the final Dino Crisis on the PlayStation is a must-have for fans of M-rated games. It avoids the stereotypes of its genre and delivers a refreshing take on the third-person action shooter.

Quake III Arena - Sega Dreamcast (2000)
Street Price: $35.00

Quake III Arena for the Dreamcast is an excellent port of the action-packed first-person shooter for the PC. Most PC first-person shooters ported to consoles tend to lose playability, control, and options. Quake III Arena for the Dreamcast remains faithful to the original PC game, and is one of the best first-person shooters ever to appear on a video game console.

Unreal Tournament - Sega Dreamcast (2001)
Street Price: $19.99

Unreal Tournament is an immensely fun game that sets new standards for console ports of PC first-person shooters and will have you coming back many months down the line. Quake III Arena on the Dreamcast may offer more visceral gameplay, but Unreal Tournament is the most complete package yet. If you haven't taken your Dreamcast online for some frag sessions, Unreal Tournament is an excellent place to start. It's very easy to join a game online.

In Red Faction, Volition attempts to combine the best elements from notable first-person shooters such as Valve's Half-Life, Rare's Perfect Dark and GoldenEye 007, and Raven's Soldier of Fortune into one game. It's heavy on story, has a wide variety of tasks for you to accomplish, and involves combat that's visceral and strategic at the same time. As the best first-person shooter on the PS2, you'd do well to add this excellent M-rated game to your collection.

Twisted Metal: Black - Sony PlayStation 2 (2001)
Street Price: $35.00

Twisted Metal: Black looks, sounds, and, most importantly, plays better than any car combat game before it. The cinema sequences that explain the storylines of each character as you advance through the game are so well written and look so good that they actually make you want to go back and complete the game with each character. Add in a fantastic two-to-four-player multiplayer mode, and Twisted Metal: Black is the only game you'll need for the PlayStation 2 for a long time to come.

Conker's Bad Fur Day - Nintendo 64 (2001)
Street Price: $29.87

There are few games that push the envelope as far as Conker's Bad Fur day for the N64. Complete with swearing, toilet humor, and controversial character designs, Conker will not disappoint those who enjoy raunchy video games. Perhaps most importantly, the game is technically excellent. The pacing is perfect, the gameplay is varied and predominantly tight, and the graphics are second to none on the Nintendo 64. Don't be fooled by the cute exterior, Conker's Bad Fur Day is strictly for adults.
