Chapter 1: Weapons

This section covers Undying's primary weapon arsenal. Inside, you'll find strategies for their use, for specific ammunition types, against specific creatures, spell combinations, and for maximizing your potential for survival!

Gel'ziabar Stone

It's not really a weapon, though it can be used to kill creatures indirectly. It has three main uses, which are worth noting in this chapter. First, the Gel'ziabar stone reveals hidden images and sounds that the scrye spell can pick up. The Gel'ziabar will glow when you're in an area with a hidden vision; simply cast the scrye spell to reveal the scene. Also, when you're holding the Gel'ziabar stone, your selected spell is more powerful.

Finally, the Gel'ziabar stone can be used to push enemies in front of you backward. This comes in handy during many situations. For instance, if you're standing on a narrow bridge of a cliff, you can push enemies off and away from you. Also, you can use the ectoplasm or skull storm spells exclusively in conjunction with the Gel'ziabar's pushback ability. Keep the enemies away from you while you pummel them with the spell - this helps conserve ammunition for other, more powerful weapons, like the revolver, shotgun, or spear gun.

Revolver

The revolver is the bread-and-butter weapon for most of the game - its ammo is quite plentiful, which means you can lean on it in a jam. However, its rate of fire and damage potential are both quite low; both of these can be tough when you're in a jam against multiple enemies or a single, tough foe. It's also important to be accurate with the revolver; go for head shots against most enemies because you can inflict more damage. Revolver bullets can also ricochet off walls.

Reloading the revolver takes a lot of time. Make an attempt to reload during any battle downtimes. In other words, try not to be forced to reload. This leaves you highly vulnerable to an enemy counterattack. Also, you'll uncover silver bullets during the adventure. Use the silver bullets against magic users, such as the flying sorceress and Verago from the Onieros realm. The most important element of the revolver is to minimize ammo waste and maximize damage potential with accurate shots.

The revolver is most effective early in the game to hold off howlers and fight other low-level enemy creatures. Near the end of the game you'll implement the revolver again, though this time with silver bullets to take out the magic user creatures. Several spells work well in combination with the revolver with ectoplasm being arguably one of the best. Since the revolver is rather weak, ectoplasm provides an added punch. Amplified haste can also be used to increase revolver firepower; though realize you'll have to pause and reload that much more often.

Shotgun

A very versatile weapon, the shotgun holds two shells, can be fired in double-barrel mode, and can be loaded with phosphorous shells for use against organic enemies (like the Trsanti or plant-based enemies). Like the revolver, the shotgun takes time to reload. Keep this in mind when you're battling a tough foe. Look for cover and run into a safe area while you reload. For nasty beasts, place the shotgun in double-barrel mode. Don't waste ammunition by firing from long range - the shotgun is strictly a close-range weapon. Employ hit-and-run techniques. Run up close and pummel the beast with the shotgun and then back off quickly while you reload.

The shotgun is effective against nearly every enemy in the game but you definitely want to be within close-range to maximize damage and minimize ammo waste. If the target lies at long-range, consider using the revolver (even if it's weaker) or skull storm once acquired. Don't hesitate to toggle to double-barreled mode against tough creatures within close-range.

Use the shield in combination with the shotgun. Since you're likely within close-range, the shield can help protect you from inevitable, and tough to dodge, enemy attacks. As soon as your shield falls, cast the spell again. After the battle, give your mana time to recharge so you're prepared for the next battle. You'll find the shotgun effective against most enemies, with a preference for slow, close-range foes. Tackle the Mon'to-shonoi, Trsanti, and monastery monks with the shotgun.

Scythe of the Celts

You'll use the scythe (once uncovered from the monastery) to terminate the game's boss enemies. It's also a very powerful weapon to use in standard battles. First, it doesn't consume ammunition; this allows you to stock up on shotgun and revolver ammunition (if you're running low) so that you'll have more weapon choices. Second, it's easy to hit with the scythe. Simply run up close, swing, and retreat.

One problem with the scythe, however, is its mana consumption. This can be a problem if you're implementing the scythe in conjunction with a spell like haste or shield. Use the scythe in spurts and then revert back to another weapon. Employ hit-and-run and circle strafe (which means to circle around your opponent) while you swing the scythe for maximum damage potential - and remain quick to avoid enemy attacks.

The scythe offers a frenzy mode (toggle using the ALT key) that steals health from the enemy and adds it to your own. In frenzy mode, the scythe consumes a lot of mana and takes much longer to swing. Thus, it's tougher to connect consistently with each attack and each swing contributes to significant mana loss, which could prove disastrous if you're relying on a shield, haste, or ectoplasm to assist. But, collect enough arcane whorls (locations are mentioned within the walk-through) and you can offset much of the scythe's mana drain.

Once acquired, the scythe is excellent against the howlers (just a couple swings can take out a single howler) and useful against any non-ranged enemy that you can quickly escape from, such as the Eternal Autumn teleporting tribesman (cast haste for additional help in escaping the tribesman attacks).
