Appendix E: Armor Much like the game's weapons, you will rarely acquire armor in Chrono Cross. Instead, you must build better forms of protection at forges using the equipment components you receive as battle and exploration spoils. Each type of armor has certain advantages and limitations, so don't rely on simply the defensive stats when equipping your characters. Certain types of specialized armor such as dresses and capes cannot be forged and impose certain restrictions on the characters who equip them. Experiment to determine your best results! Vests Vests provide the most basic form of bodily protection. They're less expensive to forge, require fewer components as well, and allow for better maneuverability. These are best equipped on your sturdy, powerful characters to improve their ability to dodge attacks without worrying about compromising their durability.
Mails Mails offer better protection than vests, but at the cost of maneuverability. They are also fairly expensive to forge and may require an uncomfortably large number of components for forging. A character wearing mail will be slower to react to attacks and less likely to move out of the way. This is counterbalanced, of course, by the fact that mails can better absorb the damage they receive. These are best equipped on lighter, weaker characters who have inherently high EVD% ratings or on characters wearing accessories that boost their maneuverability.
