Quina is probably the most versatile character you can add to your party. She can operate as a very powerful fighter (though the damage caused by her attacks appears to be random), and her magical abilities, after eating the correct monster, can be extremely powerful. One of Quina's most powerful spells is mighty guard. By using this, you are able to enhance the protection of all of your characters. Second to this is her ability to cast her night spell. By properly using night, and equipping everyone in your party with insomniac, you can put a monster to sleep, then attack it with all three of your party members, and put it back to sleep before it can retaliate. Captain Albert Steiner Not only is Steiner the most powerful fighter available, but if you have Vivi in your party, you can also use Steiner to cast magic like Vivi, effectively giving you two black mages. The only limitation to this is that Vivi must be conscious for this to work. As far as the story is concerned, however, Steiner is one of the characters that shows some tremendous growth, but you're required to really pay attention to him to realize it. In the beginning, Steiner will prove to be a source of frustration, as he constantly gets in the way of everything. As the game progresses, however, he will eventually even admit that he is considering Zidane as the man for her highness, Princess Dagger. Vivi Orunitia Vivi is the one character in your party who is truly unique. He holds this position by being the only true black mage in Final Fantasy IX, and near the end he will become invaluable. When Vivi learns osmose, he may end up being the only mage that you use near the end, simply because he can suck MP from the enemy while the rest of your party members will still be reliant upon ether and resting. He also has some of the most powerful abilities that you will be able to use, and many of those abilities are unique to him. Zidane Tribal Zidane is our hero throughout Final Fantasy IX, and as a result, he is with you throughout the game. While this keeps the party moving along, it can be severely restricting at times. For instance, if you take the time to build everyone's levels up, Zidane will be far more powerful than anyone else in your party - he'll be almost 20 levels beyond anyone else as you near the end of the game.
