Ghost Buster

User Rating: 8.5 | Ghosthunter PS2
I'll admit I'm a fan of the survival horror subgenere, it's always the most exciting and thrilling for me. This is another one of those gems that unfortunately we passed by like a ghost. If they ever made the film "Ghostbusters" into a next gen video game hopefully it will be as fun as this game which is probably the closest and most accuarate to Ghostbusting as we'll ever get.

The game is a light hearted pulp horror where it no doubt has a really creepy atmosphire that can almost send chills down your spine but also doesn't take itself too seriously where there are moments of comidy at the right times and places, sort of like with "Evil Dead 2" and the original "Ghostbusters" a beautiful mix of horror and comidy.

It's true that this games gameplay isn't anything entirely new but that's not a bad thing, I've seen plenty of good games that use the same format same truth applies with movies sometimes; but it's all done well and right. The combat system is solid, a varity of weapons, the works. Using those weapons are great my favorate feature of course is the disc grenade which contains or can even slow down the ghosts. It's a really gratifing feeling capturing the ghosts in fact the highlight of the game is in the capture itself, when you use the disc grenade if the ghost is weakened enough it produces a cool special effect where they implode into this freaky kaladascope ball and then get sucked into the disc grenade. One thing that is unique is the two man approach similar with of course "Primal" this is in the form of the astral ability where you can play as a ghost and use certain abilities to clear obsticles, it's an interesting and not all too common feature.

What really makes this game stand out is in mood, atmosphere, storytelling, and soundtrack. The same guys that made the game "Primal" always seem to know how to blend and execute all these factors very well with the upmost care. The mood and atmoshere is great thanks to the vastness in graphic design it all fits like a glove for the game, you see corrupted interrors and external enviorments which give the feeling that your not just playing a game but that it's an experence. My favorate would be the swamp level, there is just something about that location that holds such a creepy power to it. But also in the ghosts themselves there very well designed they really are creatively spooky/creepy and never in short supply. The one ghost that I found creepy the most would have to be the giant deformed teddy bears, I don't know why but there is something about turning a child's play thing into something evil that is just chilling; it's remoncent of that third level boss in the video game "Splaterhouse 3" also a evil teddy bear which was freaky. Also there is no blood or gore, which isn't a bad thing because due to how well focused this game is on these elements there is no need for them.

Story is actually pritty interesting thanks to the voice acting talents like Rob Paulsen (Pinky from "Pinky and the Brain", Raphael from TMNT old version, Yacko for "Animaniacs", etc.) who always had a great voice his voice just fits like a glove for the main hero you play Lazerus (whom looks a little like actor James Rondy from TV show "Psych") but just the way they tell it, it actually makes up appriciate what you are doing in the game as if you really are part of the story. This isn't entirely anything special but I just wanted to point this fact out for this game.

The game isn't that hard due to it's straightforward nature even boss battles are sort of easy. But it's not that easy. Not just from usual resistance obsticales or that enimies get a little stronger when you progress (or not that strong once you figure their weaknesses out)but clues aren't entirely obvious, well actually they are it sort of depends on how you see things but chances are you might need to look at a guide once in a while if you are unable to spot them. Also there is no map but there really is no need for one because like I said it's a rather linar straightfoward game you can retrace you steps and know wheres where and this is a good thing because it gives the game an exploration element a freedom to figure things out yourself (another thing in the previous game "Primal") and I'm glad for that because this gives the game a slight realism to it. It's always a rewarding feeling knowing it was your own investigations skills have got you though from point A to B.

"Ghosthunter" isn't quite on A-Rank survival horror games like with the "Resident Evil" and "Silent Hill" horror franchises, it's on the B-Rank in my book. But that's another good thing about this game it's not trying to one up it's compitition it's good in it's own way for what it is.

Think your not affraid of ghosts this game might make you think twice, so happy ghost hunting.
